Meet Nika King

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nika King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Nika , we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?

I get my generosity from my mom. She was a single mother raising six kids and somehow she still found a way to help others. There were times we wouldn’t have enough food and she’d bring other kids from the neighborhood to our house. My mother has always been a giver.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Nika King is an actress and comedian best known for her role as Leslie Bennett on the HBO series “Euphoria.” Nika King has a diverse background in comedy, having performed in various comedy shows and festivals, and she also hosts a monthly comedy show called Nika King & Friends.

Apart from her acting career, King is actively involved in social causes. She co=owns Blue Tree Cafe, a vegan soul food restaurant with her mother, Chef Sharon, in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. She also founded a nonprofit organization called Rose of Sharon, which focuses on improving mental health through health eating in the Black community. Additionally, she launched Jeli Life, an online mentorship platform for marginalized communities in the entertainment industry. .Nika King stars in a feature film titled “Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot.” This film is inspired by a powerful true story set in East Texas. It follows Donna and Reverend Martin, who are central to a heartwarming narrative about adoption and community support. The couple, along with their rural church, took on the remarkable task of adopting seventy-seven children from the local foster care system, children that no one else would take. Their efforts sparked a movement to protect and care for America’s most vulnerable children, showcasing the impact of determined love and community action

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My ability to recover quickly from setbacks and adapt to challenging situations is a superpower. Pursuing acting is very difficult but with every no, I have to trust a yes is right around the corner. Resilience is crucial in every situation in life. Its what separate the people who succeed and the people who don’t.
I would say another skillset would be effective communication. It’s not only about speaking clearly and listening actively but also being able to convey ideas and emotions in a way that is understood by others. For example, being able to tell your agent or team what you stand for, and not being afraid to say no even when they push you to say yes. It’s important you know who you are in an industry that tries to put you in a box. My other quality is my ability to demonstrate strong entrepreneurial skills. Beyond acting, I have found ways to stay creative and also serve my community.
My advice to anyone who wants to pursue in any of the things I have done is expect things to be hard. Nothing worth having comes easy. Establish a strong foundation through prayer and surround yourself with like minded individuals. There is nothing you can’t attain with hard work and dedication.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My biggest helper to stay humble is Christ Jesus. There have been so many things I have had to overcome without becoming bitter. I have been betrayed, lied on, stolen from by people who were the closest to me. I have had to forgive and move on knowing God will restore everything that was lost. My faith is my currency. I use it to get me through the difficult times. The power of faith keep me hopeful and creates a sense of peace and inner strength. I know all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose.
