We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikki Khounphachansy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikki below.
Nikki, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I truly believe a hard work ethic runs in our bloodline. You can teach people what hard work is but it’s something that has come naturally to all of us in our family. From when our family first came here to America, hustling to make a living, selling gold, the grind and hustle was instilled and passed down. Seeing my parents, grandparents, uncles, and aunties hustle always inspired me to grind.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been in the restaurant industry since I was 16. I’m a huge foodie and love everything about food and beverages. I’ve done everything from line cook, restaurant management, accounting, and co-owning a previous ice cream concept. When my father Dong first left corporate life to start Prime Tap House from his love of craft beer, I knew I had to be there with him along with the rest of my family. We started out as just a tap house in 2019 serving only craft beer from mainly local breweries with some out of state, and eventually the pandemic hit the world. We decided to take advantage of it and add on our Asian style chicken wing concept to go with the craft beer. This is when my dad brought me on and we started really taking off when we launched our food. Food and drinking is a huge part of our family and culture. We come from a very big family and this is such a key part of how we interact and spend time together. Our goal is to share that with the community in our style.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 things that I would say are the following:
1. Always stay true and authentic to yourself and beliefs. Believe in yourself and your ideas and what inspires you. The moment I’m not doing what is authentic to me, I’m not doing it right.
2. Keep the grind going. There are going to be lows and highs all the time. Some days are going to be amazing and some that will absolutely beat you to a pulp. But no matter what this is the journey you’ve chosen because it’s something you’re passionate about.
3. Self care. I’m all about the grind but resetting and recharging is just as important to keep you going. Make time to breathe, do things you love, spend time with family. We got one shot at life and one body so enjoy it and take care of yourself!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
There isn’t a specific person but many people along the way in my journey. My dad has been one of the biggest helps sharing all his knowledge from his life and corporate work experiences. Him not only bringing that entire skillset with him when starting Prime originally but he also shares it with our entire staff. My previous bosses / mentors at other jobs have helped pave the way for me in this industry and showed me the ropes to this game. Also our entire team at Prime, they drive us to keep pushing for more and also have amazing input on so many things. They genuinely are an important part of success.
