We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikki Scandalous. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikki below.
Nikki, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I have an undeniable knowing that it will always work out for me. Because I live in my truth and I’m a good person, I trust that the universe will always provide. That trust in my gut is where my optimism comes from. It’s not about ignoring struggles or pretending everything is perfect. I have been through a lot, I’ve built from nothing, and I’ve faced setbacks. But every single time, something greater comes out of it.
My creativity also plays a big part. I see the world in color and possibilities, so even when things feel heavy, my mind goes straight to ‘what could be’ instead of just ‘what is.’ And honestly, part of it is a choice. I know people look to me, my team, my clients, my community and I want them to feel safe to dream bigger too. My optimism isn’t blind positivity, it’s resilience, it’s a gut feeling and proof from my own life that the universe always has my back.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a Salon owner and over the years I’ve become more known as a vivid artist. My salon, Scandalous Artistry, is all about transformations inside and out. We’ve been open for three years now, but I’ve been a hairstylist for nine, and only recently do I feel like I’m starting to gain recognition in the industry. That’s exciting, but for me the real magic has always been what happens behind the scenes — the relationships, the laughs, the art, and the love we spread through this work.
Scandalous Artistry isn’t just a salon, it’s a creative hub. It’s a place where clients and artists come together to feel inspired and free, whether that’s through bold transformations, collaborations, or just being themselves without judgment. We built it to push back against the idea that beauty has to be serious, beige, or watered down. Here, it’s bright, fun, and unapologetic — we’ve got disco balls, bubble machines, cotton candy at events. I want people to walk in and instantly remember that beauty can still be playful.
Personally, one of my favorite parts of what I do is creating photo shoots and themed hair looks. I love turning hair into art, pulling inspiration from things I grew up loving, and bringing those ideas to life in a way that feels fun and immersive. For me, hair isn’t just about color or cut — it’s about creating an experience, a memory, and a feeling.
At the heart of it all, my mission is simple: to show people that you don’t have to tone yourself down to be successful. You can be bold, colorful, and real, and still build something lasting. Recognition in the industry means a lot, but what means the most to me is knowing that I’m making an impact — creating joy, building community, and spreading love through everything we do at Scandalous.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, one of the most impactful qualities in my journey has been the way I connect with people. I have this ability to make people feel like they’ve known me forever, and that comfort allows them to trust me with their hair and their story. It’s something I think is within me, but it’s also something you can develop — by being present, listening deeply, and showing people that you truly care.
The second thing is finding mentors. I would not be where I am without people who poured into me, challenged me, and reminded me that I was capable even when I doubted myself. For anyone just starting out, don’t be afraid to ask questions, shadow someone you admire, or invest in education.
And the third is not being so hard on yourself. Progress takes time, and you can’t rush the journey. Take photos of your work — they’re proof of how far you’ve come and they show people that you’re serious about growing. Clients and supporters are more likely to invest in you when they see your effort and your evolution.
So my advice is: make people feel safe, find mentors, and give yourself grace. Those three things will take you further than you realize.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I think when you’re starting out, it’s important to try a little bit of everything. The beauty industry is constantly evolving, and as a creative person, I need that change too — it keeps me from feeling stagnant. One of the things that’s taken me far in my career is that I really invested time in learning all the basics. I didn’t just run toward the things I loved — I challenged myself to learn areas I wasn’t as excited about at first.
Those skills paid off later, because now I don’t feel limited in my art. Even as a color specialist, I feel confident that I can handle anything that comes my way, whether it’s corrective work, cutting, or styling. I think right now in our industry, a lot of people come out of school and jump straight into the one thing they want to do. There’s nothing wrong with specializing, but skipping the fundamentals can be limiting.
My advice would be: explore and stretch yourself early, build a strong foundation, and then once you’ve found your lane, go all in on your strengths. That way you have both — depth and versatility — and that’s what really builds confidence.
