We were lucky to catch up with Niko Suave recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Niko, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Just authentically being me. Literally nothing more, nothing less. I’ve always had this thing where people naturally gravitate towards me and they love me. And i say that in the most humble way. But yeah i don’t even really have to do anything besides that and staying true to myself, my morals, what i believe in and stand on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Well, i’m Niko Suave and i’m a mobile master barber stylist based out of ATL, GA. I fell in love with cutting hair 2 years ago, the most rewarding feeling is being able to express my creativity while doing something i genuinely enjoy doing also being able to experience different people and to do something to make them feel good and look good. Im a firm believer in if you feel better, you do better. I’ve also been working the past few months of legitimately establishing a nonprofit organization called My Chance To Give Back, to provide free haircuts for the less fortunate in the city of ATL. Ive orchestrated it on my own, (along with my village) a total of 5 times and i told myself i was going to be consistent with staying on top of it. So going legit is my next step towards that. I also have a list of other business ventures i’ve been researching so it’s a lot of things i’ll have my hands in, yall just gotta stay tuned!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d have to say being consistent, integrity and keeping business, business.. I say that because being consistent will take you far, it can open doors of opportunity. Integrity because you’ll have some type of moral to stand by so you won’t just go for anything. And lastly keeping business strictly business because if certain lines or boundaries are crossed it could possible be detrimental to the business aspect of it. So as far as advise, i’d just say stay consistent in whatever it is you’re passionate about. You never know who’s watching and where that can take you. Overall, keep going. Don’t stop, whatever God has for you will happen. Just keep the faith and keep keeping on!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Honestly, I pray. That’s my first thing, then I do something that’s good for me or makes my feel good. So i’ll zone out and go to the gym or write. Writing has always been an outlet for me. But really just thinking about what’s next to like give me a sense of hope. I stand by this: The storm don’t last forever and it could always be worse.
