We were lucky to catch up with Nikol Rogers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikol, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Here’s the good news: we are all born with confidence.
My mother said I wouldn’t come out of the womb until the lighting was right, and when I was a toddler I had two things with me at all times. The first was a blanket, and the other was a bucket. When I wasn’t sitting in the bucket with my blanket, I was standing on top of it giving speeches in front of the TV with my arms up.
You can say I was destined for the stage.
I started in the arts from a young age and loved it. I graduated top in my class with a BFA in Musical Theater and Dance Minor from Penn State and moved to NYC right out of college, freshly married and ready to take the city by storm.
My dream? Broadway. And things started out great. I was working, choosing from several offers for my gigs, getting big callbacks, and doing what I loved.
But time passed, and I started to experience a pattern. In most cases, when I had a big callback for a Broadway show, I would doubt myself and choke. I wouldn’t perform my best.
There were times when I delivered my best under very stressful situations, or in front of big directors. But those Broadway shows closed before I could join. I didn’t understand why sometimes I could nail it and other times I couldn’t.
I felt like I was on a roller coaster. I was up and down, and I had hit a ceiling in my career. After many years, I still had not reached my dream of being on Broadway, and I had literally done everything else….NYC Rockettes, regional theater, National Tours, National Commercials, Off Broadway….but the whole reason I had moved to NYC….I couldn’t seem to make happen.
My confidence was shot. The confidence I naturally had in my younger years seemed to be gone.
And then came the biggest storm I’d had thus far. My whole life went up in flames. In one year’s time, I went through a devastating divorce, was robbed, lost a dear friend to a heart attack and was in two car accidents. I watched the life I had carefully crafted go up in smoke, and fell to my knees with the weight of losing so much I loved.
In this highly vulnerable place, a voice clearly said to me, “you need meditation.”
Considering I was losing everything, I actually listened. I went to yoga class and came out with the sole purpose of buying a book on meditation. Intuitively pulling a book off the store shelf, every word was jumping off the page. The book was actually about Buddhism, and I was so confused. I came here looking for meditation, not Buddhism.
So, I started seeking. At one point I was desperate to get out of the city, and have a break from all the heartache and change. Rummaging through my bag, I came across the notes I had taken when I was at one of my new Buddhist friend’s apartment, and at the bottom I had written the name of a Zen Monastery she went to.
I immediately looked online and saw they had an Intro to Zen Training Weekend coming up in two weeks. I got the last spot.
When I arrived at the Monastery in the vast expanse of the mountains, I knew I had found my answer.
When I sat on the cushion, my whole body said YES.
I was learning the practice of embodiment, what it means to trust myself, and listen to my needs. From the voice that arose months earlier, to finding my place of refuge, my life changed at that moment.
When I attended my first ever Buddhist support group and they passed the mic around, I poured my heart out, and something magical happened..
The people there didn’t turn away. In fact, they came closer. It was then I realized I could drop the act of “having it all together” or “being perfect” and instead be myself fully. I realized I could be myself AND still be loved and accepted. I didn’t know it at the time, but this was the start of Powerful Presence, my signature program and life philosophy.
Following that voice, I discovered something I thought I had lost years ago from my childhood.
I discovered my confidence.
And most importantly, I discovered what confidence actually was.
Confidence is the voice of your wholeness. It’s the power and the wisdom of the Universe within you, and is your natural state. It’s the essential ingredient that fuels your work, desires, and impact.
I had spent decades believing that confidence was how I looked, what I wore, what I said, and how well I was liked by others.
Of course this definition left me powerless and constantly in a victim consciousness.
But reclaiming my confidence led me to healing fully from my divorce, launching a global coaching business, becoming a best selling author, finding my life partner, overcoming chronic pain, and creating my family, becoming a first time mother at the age of 47.
Confidence was the buried link for the life I desired. And because I saw how magical this work was, I decided to devote my life to helping others do the same.
I left behind my dreams of being on Broadway to realize a much greater purpose through coaching and spiritual teaching.
And now, I have not only proof of my life transformation, but the lives of my clients across the globe who have quadrupled their income, created award winning businesses they love, sold out shows and events, and increased their customers and clients exponentially.
And the key to every one of them reaching their potential was confidence.
Confidence is really the fuel for your desires. It’s what makes the life of your dreams finally take shape and manifest into the here and now.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a speaker, best selling author, and confidence coach who helps people double their impact and be seen as their most powerful self. The core of my work is encompassed in my ZenRed Method, which has been taught globally.
The Zen Red Method is a set of tools and strategies developed over a 25 year period based on my experience with performance techniques, Non Violent Communication, Zen Buddhism, Energy Psychology, and coaching hundreds of people how to achieve confidence in their life. This method teaches you how to re-frame how you think, feel, and act from a place of power, rather than from fear or limiting beliefs. When you apply the method to any area of your life you will transform your life!
It’s my belief that we truly have all we need within us, so I developed ZRM as my offering to silence your inner critic and strip away your limiting beliefs so you can finally be seen, and move past barriers that have kept you stuck in the past.
This Method has helped my clients become more confident versions of themselves and in alignment with their true purpose. You can easily learn this method through my Signature Course, Powerful Presence, or working 1 on 1 in a VIP Day or private coaching.
With a 20 year professional performance career that includes kicking eye high as a Rockette, I have stood on countless stages. I teach that the heart of transformation lies in discovering who you are. It is this journey that unlocks a person’s greatest power, and allows you to manifest a life you love.
Clients and students have published books, sold out events and concerts, created Solo shows, spoken on large stages, and created award winning businesses that feed and nourish them.
We know the number 13 to be traditionally viewed as an unlucky number, but for me, it turned out to be the most transformative number of my life, and the inspiration for my best selling premiere book: “13: One Woman’s Sacred Journey To Discovering Her Greatest Power.”
This book is a story about the year my life went up in flames, burning to ash all of who I thought I was. But as I watched the life I had built disappear into smoke, I found myself hearing a new, quiet voice within. The voice of 13.
13 is the sacred invitation, the auspicious calling to your heart to finally have the life you have always desired.
This book is for people who want to create a whole new beginning and have decided their life is precious and worth living. It is also about the workings of sacred numbers in our lives and how devastation can open you to your greatest power.
After a lot of moving around as a child in a military family, and living in NYC for 20 years, I now call New Jersey home. I live here with my life partner and family, and can be found regularly holding binoculars, standing in nature, and fawning over birds.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three areas of knowledge that were most impactful were discernment, skillful means, and safe embodiment. Because of this, I base all of my work on these three pillars.
Discernment gives you the ability to build and surround yourself with healthy relationships. As our core human need is belonging, this is paramount to creating the life we desire. We are stronger together, but it is vital we are surrounding ourselves with the right support and relationships that see us as whole and complete, as opposed to something to fix or partner in victim beliefs and actions. Discernment is ultimately self trust. It’s learning when to say yes and when to say no. The best way to develop or improve this is through some kind of silence practice that allows you to understand your body’s signals and your own personal warning signs.
Skillful means is what creates audience impact. Who you are being decides how your audience reacts to you. When you have skillful means, you are magnetic and are genuinely lifting your audience. Your audience is on the edge of their seats because you feel safe and have the ability to speak directly to them in a way that allows them to feel seen and heard. A simple tool you can start using today is to focus on what you share with your audience. It may be you both have hair, you both have skin or eyes, but placing your focus on what you share will help to eliminate imposter syndrome and anxiety.
Safe embodiment is the vehicle to hearing the voice of your confidence and allow you to take fearless action and create the life you want. This means you feel safe in your body, and when anxiety arises, you have the tools to calm your nervous system and come back home to your power. It’s the ability to turn within and know what works best for you, but ultimately it is all based in the belief that you have everything you need within, and can take tension and stress as the warning sign that you are not feeling safe. Safe embodiment is based in your wholeness and no longer seeks or is based on approval or perfection. It is a giant sigh of relief and your natural state. You can start to learn this through energy psychology techniques like EFT, meditation, and yoga. You will know it works because you feel better after.
