We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikola Webster. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikola below.
Nikola, we sincerely appreciate you joining us today and agreeing to talk about some very personal topics. So, to kick things off, let’s talk about a tough one – divorce. Can you talk to us about how you overcame divorce?
I was in a loveless marriage that probably should have ended ten years before it did. I chose to leave the marriage but assumed there would be an amicable divorce, and it was anything but, and my ex went on a mission to ruin me financially. My first line of defense was my circle of friends, which I consider family. I am an extremely independent woman, and this is probably the first time in my life where I reached for support. My friends were fundamental to my ability to overcome the divorce. Sometimes, this support helped me comb through hours of paperwork, my game plan, and my next move, and sometimes, it was emotional support – simply being with me when needed.
Financially and business-wise, I took a year off. There was no point in growing my business because alimony was potentially on the table. And I would rather lose it all and start again before getting into an alimony situation. So, during my year off, I traveled, reflected on what was next for me, and wrote my following goals and business plan. As I’ve evolved, my plans have, and I’m currently expanding the Airbnb side of my company to Scotland,
Overall, for me to overcome my divorce, I needed to find myself again – my authentic self and let that person out.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a travel expert who uses a combination of travel hacks (points, free stopovers, miles, timeshares, etc). The business started as a hobby. I was tired of sending detailed emails to friends and decided to publish the content as it was repetitive.
From there, I quickly learned that there was money to be made from great content, and I studied how to make money via ad networks and affiliates. I took numerous courses on both and Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and then the money started to flow in.
From there, I expanded into Airbnb rentals, which are even more lucrative. I’m in the process of rebuilding this side of my business.
My passions are endless. I love life and can be as excited about staying in a yurt in the middle of nowhere as I can be about seeing a dolphin. I am passionate about Florida Springs, Scotland, finding undiscovered spots, castles, wildlife, photography, and, recently, drone flying. I also own a boat and spend countless hours in the Gulf of Mexico. I thrive on staying in unusual accommodations like container homes, yurts, tree houses, and tiny homes. Lastly, I am a hot tub fanatic!
Relative to my brand, the focus is this: Share with people places they would never know about and teach them how to travel the world without breaking the bank.
In addition my brand is an honest reflection of me! It’s not an influencer gig or a review gig – it’s my opinion based on my experience good bad or ugly.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Persistence: Everyone has heard, “If at first you don’t succeed, try again”—it’s the basis for all success. Things will always go wrong. The key is to pick yourself back up and learn from the mistake.
2. Honesty: I pride myself on telling my audience everything they need to know, whether it’s good, bad, or ugly. This is something many in the travel industry do not do. Most would instead tell you it’s great because that’s what most want to hear. However, it’s not always the case. I tell all—no exceptions – even under contracted gigs!
3. Adaptability: In today’s society, things change daily. If you can’t cope with consistent change and the ability to pivot, then you will struggle.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate or partner with people who have experience kayaking the Sawanee River or other rivers in Florida. I am exploring much of the wilderness in Florida and would like to do a long multi-day kayak trip.
I would also love to collaborate with creators in Scotland!
People that I will connect with will be full of energy, have a great sense of humor and be comfortable being uncomfortable when things go wrong.;
