We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nile Fortner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nile below.
Nile, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Ever since I was a kid, I was drawn to the power of storytelling. Whether it was through the vivid worlds of comic books, the unforgettable characters in movies, or the thrilling narratives that unfolded on Saturday mornings in the family living room, stories always spoke to me. They were more than just entertainment — they were magic. They were windows into the human experience, mirrors reflecting our struggles, triumphs, and dreams.
Growing up, I realized that this deep love for stories wasn’t just a pastime — it was a purpose. While others were playing outside or scrolling endlessly, I was writing, imagining, and studying the craft of storytelling. I fell in love with the idea that a single story could inform, inspire, and even change lives.
That love led me to journalism, where I discovered that truth, creativity, and storytelling could come together to serve something greater. And as I found my voice, I knew exactly where I wanted to use it — South Florida.
There’s something special about this region — a vibrant culture, rich diversity, and a heartbeat that comes alive through its entrepreneurs, local businesses, chefs, artists, realtors, and community leaders. South Florida isn’t just where I live — it’s where I found my calling.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
With Our South Florida, I’ve made it my mission to tell the stories that matter. Stories that keep us inspired, informed, and entertained. Stories that unite us and give a voice to the people shaping the very fabric of our communities. Whether it’s a Pompano Beach artist debuting at Art Basel, a Fort Lauderdale realtor baking for kids, or a family-run restaurant bringing people together through food, every story adds to the beautiful mosaic of South Florida life.
Through local journalism, digital storytelling, community features, and multimedia content, Our South Florida captures the essence of what makes this region unforgettable. And in doing so, we connect neighbors, elevate businesses, support creatives, and remind everyone that the soul of South Florida lives in its stories.
Our South Florida is more than a media platform — it’s a celebration of our culture, creativity, and community. And for me, storytelling isn’t just a job. It’s a lifelong passion. A purpose. And I’m grateful every day to use that purpose to shine a light on the people, places, and moments that make South Florida home.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities and skills have truly shaped my journey in journalism and storytelling: curiosity, consistency, and community awareness.
Curiosity
From the beginning, my curiosity has been my compass. Whether I was watching movies, flipping through comic books, or interviewing a local business owner in South Florida, I always wanted to know why — why people do what they do, what motivates them, and how their stories can inspire others. Curiosity fuels meaningful storytelling. It drives you to dig deeper, ask better questions, and uncover the heart of a story.
Advice: For those starting out, feed your curiosity like a fire. Read widely, listen closely, and stay genuinely interested in the world around you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions — the best stories come from the bold questions that others overlook.
Community Awareness
What makes Our South Florida powerful is its connection to the people and pulse of the region. Knowing what matters to your audience — from small businesses to cultural events — allows you to tell stories that resonate. Community storytelling isn’t just about reporting — it’s about reflecting and uplifting.
Advice: Spend time in your community. Attend events, talk to people, and learn what’s happening on the ground. Understand the issues, successes, and passions that define your audience. The more in tune you are, the more authentic and impactful your stories will be.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
And most importantly, regardless of the person or background, I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to be seen, heard, and celebrated. I’m here to help amplify voices, promote people doing great work, and remind them — and others — that their story has the power to inform, uplift, and inspire.
And we all may be different, but we all have the same heartbeat. One pulse, running through the streets of South Florida; it’s our arteries, and I will be the one to pump the blood that brings our community to life for the greater good by helping you tell your story to a wide, engaging, and evolving audience.
