We were lucky to catch up with Nilmar Atencio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nilmar , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I think that throughout your life you develop many skills, and experiences help you grow and learn.
You should always believe in yourself no matter what, being confident helps you to open many doors. In my adolescence, I had to learn, live some experiences, but today, like everything else, the situations that you go through will help you to build yourself, and trust your intuition.
My advice is to always believe in who you are. We are all special, we all came into this world with a purpose, and we all have something to contribute to humanity.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a pastry chef and also have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Since I arrived in the United States, I’ve worked in restaurants and hotels. Today, I consult for food businesses and have my own small, healthy baking business.
Its name is Take a Peace! We offer healthy desserts that are gluten-, sugar-, and dairy-free. We also offer keto options for those following a ketogenic diet, as well as protein-rich options for those in the fitness world. This way, we can provide our audience with guilt-free options.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First, you must find your purpose; second, find something you’re passionate about that you enjoy doing every day; and third, know that you’re good at it and that you can make the most of it.
My advice is to always look for the best people in your field. I began my career alongside chef Ángel Betancourt, who helped me and taught me many things about how to make delicious desserts, for which I am grateful today.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Some of the books that most impacted my life were The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, Fear by Osho, and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
The most impactful thing is that everything you think manifests; everything you think or do to others comes back to you. It’s important to keep your thoughts in order.
Don’t be afraid. The fear of the unknown paralyzes us and causes us to always stay in our comfort zone.
Never take things personally. Most people don’t “do” things to us; everyone is simply dealing with situations in their lives.
