We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nils Davey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nils below.
Nils, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
As a creative director a central focus of my work is developing solutions to problems so creative block can be extremely difficult when on a tight deadline. In a perfect world I’d have time to sit with block and work through it using time but this is rarely the case. To combat creative blocks I have a number of resources and techniques that I’ve developed over the years.
Often someone else’s creativity can spark my own so I always look through Pinterest as a way to inspire myself. My Pinterest www.pinterest.com/nilsdavey/ is highly curated and for a person working in visual solutions this is an extremely helpful resource offering algorithmic rabbit holes to go down based on color theme, build, mood or any other keyword.
Another essential technique is to immerse myself in the project story and assets. When working with a brand, agency or client doing a deep dive on the project theme, product or goals will help overcome creative block and develop solutions to the project by truly understanding what the desired outcomes are.
I am also extremely lucky to have developed our agency to have a number of creative inputs with my business partners so when once of us is stuck we can have a group brainstorm to get the juices flowing.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the creative director and partner in the experiential creative and fabrication agency PBZ based in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree. Our work bridges the gap between agencies, clients and brands to provide award winning creative and fabrication solutions in the experiential industry. We have a sharp attention to detail and provide our clients with innovative creative solutions that are outside of the box. From there we develop physical solutions and provide executable concepts to meet project needs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three important qualities or skills that I have developed are self belief, practice and determination. All three of these were fostered during my school training at SIADUC London where I solely focused on creative design. Our school heavily relied on self motivation by creative project briefs and letting students tackle them with minor input from faculty and staff. While tricky this developed an essential need for self belief, self practice and determination to get a project to its conclusion which was perfect practice for running an agency.
How would you describe your ideal client?
Our ideal clients are ones that trust and respect us. Providing creative solutions can be an exercise in faith. We have to trust that our clients will receive our work with an open mind and they have to trust that we are providing them with the best possible solution to their experiential project. Luckily our portfolio showcases how, when we trust each other, award winning work is developed which is a the best outcome for everyone.
