We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nimrod Shoval Shrem. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nimrod below.
Hi Nimrod, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
As a child I feared the idea of a job – being forced to do something you don’t like, everyday for most of your life. I was always drawn to creativity. Whether it was music, drawing, building things, as long as I could use my imagination. So when I got into music it just made sense to me that this was what I was gonna do with my life. I thought to myself “I’m gonna have to work for the rest of my life so I might as well enjoy it”. Don’t get me wrong, It’s not like I chose music to have an easy life. If you want that you go where the money is. From the beginning I was well aware that there are millions like me around the world, who wish to have a career in music. The thing that sets the successful ones apart from those whom no one knows, is effort. People always say that success is 10% talent and 90% hard work. It’s cheesy but it’s accurate, I always keep in mind that if I truly want to work as a professional musician I need to do it with full intention, and that means work ethic, which is one of the cornerstones for doing anything successfully.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Nimrod Shoval Shrem and I’m a guitarist/composer/songwriter. I’ve been playing guitar for 17 years, inspired by guitar legends such as Slash, Guthrie Govan, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci and more. After Graduating from Berklee College of Music I moved to LA in February to begin my professional music career. Since then I have been recording and performing with singer songwriter, Charles Moret, where I met singer and keyboardist Royce Lundquist, with whom I have also recorded and performed. In September I have join the Hard rock/pop band called “What Matters Most?”. We have had several shows, and so far the band has released four singles, one which so far has reached over 100k streams on Spotify. During that time I have been writing my own original material as well, following musical inspirations such as Dream Theater, Queen, Genesis, Billy Joel and others. As of now, I am preparing for a series of shows with my band “What Matters Most?”, which are set to be held during the next two months.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learning music theory and practicing your instrument is a given, but it takes so much more. Looking back at my musical journey, I have one regret, and it’s not developing a practice routine early on. Naturally I have gone a long way, playing for 17 years, but every so often I remind myself that I could be, and could have been so much better if I sat down everyday and practiced, at least for an hour or two everyday. Habits take time, so you should develop them when you still have it. Another thing that’s important to hone is the ability to work in a group and be flexible with your ideas and visions. Music is rarely created alone, so a musician must be able to compromise and find common ground with others. It’s a challenge to get used to letting go of your own ideas but it’s often a necessary sacrifice for the collective vision, and it’s usually worth it. Last thing I’m gonna say, is actually not an obvious one, but an important one. To all of you who are trying to solve the impossible dilemma of career vs family, don’t waste your time, choose family and the career will come even faster than you ever imagined.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mother is not a musician but she loves music. No one on her side of the family works in music and yet they never made me feel like a black sheep. From the moment I got into music, I received nothing but support. On the other side, my dad is a musician, so I guess I got that gene from him. He gave me a different kind of support. Of course he helped me and taught me a lot about music, but at the same time he really let me explore this world on my own – find my own style and influences, pave my own way, and he never made me feel as if I had to prove myself or live up to certain expectations. I guess my main takeaway from all of this is that the most impactful thing my parents ever did for me was also the only thing I ever needed from them – just to support me and let me find my thing and be by my side if I ever needed any help. That is the only thing you should ever need from your family and friends, all the rest is in your power to accomplish. It’s on you to make your own decisions and act on them, to make the effort of working hard toward your goals. But yes, it is much easier when you have your family’s support. And if you don’t feel like your parents can do that for you, it doesn’t have to be them, because it doesn’t matter how bad or alone you may feel, there’s always someone rooting for you, you just need to recognize them.
