We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nina Jung a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nina, really appreciate you opening up about a very personal topic with the hopes that it can help someone out there who might be going through it. What can you share with us about your journey with postpartum depression and how you overcame PPD? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
We were at our first doctor’s appointment with our newborn—the one you go to after bringing Baby home. As I filled out the PPA/PPD questionnaire, I knew right away: I definitely checked the box for PPA.
As a practitioner, I understood why. After giving birth, your body undergoes such profound physiological changes—it’s not just about bringing new life into the world, but also about re-birthing yourself in the process.
But as a Mother, I tried to brush it off, telling myself it was just temporary. Of course, that only worked for so long. The real turning point came nearly four months later, amidst so many life changes.
Here’s what helped me through PPA / PPD:
Acknowledging it – Recognizing that this was real, not just something I could push aside.
Being in it – As a solution-oriented person, this was the hardest part. I had to surrender and sit with my feelings.
Reaching out – I opened up to my friends who were also moms. Their support was invaluable.
Getting sunlight – Simple, but powerful.
Movement – Particularly through walks and dancing with my baby. The gentle flow of energy, moving my qi and grounding myself by redirecting that energy downward, was incredibly soothing.
Swimming – The healing power of water is undeniable; it brought a sense of calm and renewal.
Acupuncture & Chiropractic Care – These therapies worked wonders for my nervous system, helping to recalibrate how both my physical and emotional body responded to stress.
Herbal Teas – Sipping on my favorite blends became a comforting ritual, offering both warmth and peace.
Intuitive Coaching – Provided me the tools and reframing of my mind & soul to process, heal, and grow.
It wasn’t a quick fix, but taking these steps gradually helped me reclaim my peace and well-being.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Nina Jung – Mother to a fierce and adventurous toddler, Intuitive Acupuncturist, Holistic Strength Coach, and Business Owner.
My journey is constantly evolving, and in this season of life, I’m fully embracing my Visionary Mama era. 💪🏼🤭 It’s been a wild ride—finding community, rebuilding my Acupuncture clinic, and chasing my little one—but I’m here for all of it. 🙏🏼
In my early 20s, I was disconnected from my true self. I sought validation from the outside world and pushed myself relentlessly, trying to overachieve. My body was speaking to me—I struggled with acne, bloating, restlessness, irregular menstrual cycles, and poor sleep.
In my late 20s, I discovered strength training, and that’s when things started to shift. I learned that optimizing my inputs could lead to better outcomes. I was getting stronger, building healthier habits, but I realized that to truly feel better—mind and body—I also had to prioritize my nutrition, sleep, and bodywork.
That’s when I found my soul calling: East Asian Medicine and Acupuncture. I believe deeply in the power of daily rituals that blend Eastern wisdom, holistic nutrition, and strength training.
As I move into 2025, I’m so excited to bring my journey full circle by building an online community of RESOURCED Mothers. This will be a space where we lift each other up (literally—weights included), share our wins and losses, and support one another as we recalibrate and rebuild ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. MORE ON THIS TO COME.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three Key Things That Transformed My Journey:
Strength Training – I’ve always been physically active, but learning to lift (heavy) weights truly changed everything for me. It helped me focus my mind and body and enter a state of flow—building both my physical strength and my confidence along the way.
The Ability to Embrace Change and Adapt – From moving across the country to building a business and becoming a Mother, learning how to embrace change and stay adaptable has been one of the most empowering skills I’ve developed.
Spiritual Healing – As a Mother, I’ve fully embraced the power of spiritual healing, no longer fearing judgment for being “too woo.” The mind-body connection is incredibly powerful, and when you learn to tap into it, the results are nothing short of transformative.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
2024 has truly been a year of deep and expansive growth for me.
Why? Because I made the conscious decision to really ‘unpack’ my Unconscious Self: specifically, the energetic blocks my mind and body had been holding onto.
This path involved weekly acupuncture & herbs, committing to inner child/shadow work, daily gratitude practices, and recognizing the miracles that show up each day. I also shifted my perspective – learning to see challenges as opportunities to build my resilience.
It wasn’t easy, but little by little, brick by brick, my mind-body began to shift. My nervous system calmed, and I felt a deeper sense of ease in my daily life and actions. This is still a work in progress for me, both as a human and as a Practitioner. However, it’s through this embodied experience that I’m able to hold space for my patients in a much deeper, more authentic way.
