We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nino Mayores a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nino, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I’ve faced a lot of challenges from a young age and lost important people along the way. Those experiences taught me that life is short, and the only thing holding us back is often ourselves. Life is always changing, and it can end at any moment—so I’ve learned to take chances and go after what I want
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Nino, and I go by DJ NINO. I like to think of myself more as a sound curator than just a DJ, since I’m still learning and growing. I got into this because of my love for music and being surrounded by it—especially a wide range of genres from my family. As I got older, I started exploring music on my own and fell deeper in love with it.
I create DJ content with the help of one of my best friends, Seagge—shoutout to insageproduction—who films most of my videos for Instagram and YouTube. While I do DJ at events, I really enjoy making content because it gives me full creative freedom with my sound. I’m always looking for new opportunities to perform and stay connected with the community. For me, it’s all about the love for the art and sharing it with others.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My passion keeps me going—when you really love something, you stick with it. I’m also always willing to learn and not afraid to ask questions. I’m lucky to have experienced DJs around me who I can turn to for advice. And most importantly, I’ve learned to be patient. Growth takes time, and you have to put in the work.
My advice to anyone starting out: have fun and remember why you started. Music and art are ways we express ourselves, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Learn the history and foundations of your craft. Be patient with your journey—don’t compare yourself to others. If you truly love what you’re doing, that’s what matters most.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My family, girlfriend, and friends all play a big role in my life. They’ve always been there for me, especially when I’m overthinking or doubting myself. They remind me why I started—because I love it and it’s fun. DJing is how I express myself through sound. We all support each other and share tools to grow. I’ve put in the work, but I wouldn’t be where I am without their support.
