Meet Nita Mistry

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nita Mistry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Nita, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I would say I didn’t come to know my purpose until a later stage. From a young age, I did various activities in the arts, which I was good at and enjoyed, but I never really knew what I wanted to do for a career going forward or what my gift was. However, it all changed when I turned 20, and I turned to Christianity. Coming into a relationship with Jesus and reading the Bible is when I began to understand what my purpose was for my life. This was not only realizing the gift I was given in storytelling as an actor and writer but, more importantly, using it for a greater purpose, which is to inspire others through my storytelling. I am a firm believer in having a purpose that should be greater than yourself.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I started acting at the age of 9 in school plays, but it wasn’t until my early 20s that I went to drama school and pursued my career as an actor professionally. I started on stage in London before booking a movie, more stage plays, and several independent films before moving to Los Angeles in 2017.

My most recent television bookings since moving to Los Angeles include General Hospital (ABC), Ordinary Joe (NBC), NCIS (CBS), and Echoes on Netflix. And this year, during the SAG strike, I took the opportunity to start writing and filming a web series. It’s my first project under my new production company, 2 Twenty Six Productions. The title of the series is “From Buckingham Palace,” which is an episodic comedy that will be released on my YouTube channel as well as various other social media platforms later next year. It is also a proof of concept. As well as writing the entire series, I am solely producing and acting in it, so it’s been full-on but incredibly fulfilling.

The series follows a young woman who comes from a less affluent neighborhood and, with that, a limited number of academic and social skills, which she carries through various opportunities that come her way. It’s a comedy and therefore very funny.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The most impactful skill I have gained during my career would, first and foremost, be perseverance. Acting is one of the most challenging industries to be a part of; with so much uncertainty and rejection, you need to be able to handle the no’s and keep going. You most definitely need thick skin. Secondly, I actively listen and learn from those who have successfully achieved what I am pursuing. I listen to a lot of podcasts, with some of my inspirations being showrunners, writers, producers, directors, and actors. I am always seeking to take initiative from those ahead of me, and lastly, knowing how to balance work and downtime. I am most definitely a workaholic! So switching off is often difficult, but I’ve been getting better at knowing when to take a little break to refresh, which is essential.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

My most significant area of growth during these last 12 months would be gaining more knowledge in regard to filmmaking. During the SAG strike, I decided to start shooting the web series I had been writing this year. I was aware it would be a lot of work, and with so many other things I deal with daily, I was unsure if I would have the time to do it, but I took the leap with a minimal budget, whilst learning the ropes. The only thing I was confident about was the script. I knew it would make the audience laugh. I feel it is unique and relatable, and so with that, I decided to ask various creatives to help me out. And luckily enough, I’ve managed to get a fantastic group of actors and crew on board. It’s so far been going well. And I’m excited to share it later next year.
