We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nkeiruka “Nk” Igbonagwam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nk, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Staying true to myself, my believes and knowing that I am unique. I’ve learned that standing out as opposed to blending in isn’t negative but rather positive because you’ll never be forgotten. My confidence and personality are my selling points, and most importantly, being Nigerian in America with an accent. I believe in my talent and pretty confident that my light shines so bright and people are curious to know who I am. Making good use of opportunities and paying attention to my calling in this world to entertain/put a smile on people’s faces has taught me to be effective/successful. I’ve always kept it real with myself, I don’t pretend to be who I am not. Rather, I want to be a better version of myself because staying true to yourself always wins.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Nigerian born Choreographer, Dancer, Content Creator, Actress, Host & Social Media Influencer. In 2009, I moved to Los Angeles, CA from Nigeria and graduated college with a degree in International Business, emphasis in Entertainment Marketing in 2017. I am also the founder of “Castedbynk”, a casting agency to give back to the community and create opportunities for raw talents that are not being recognized. I am a heavy hitter, trendsetter and did I mention, the life of the party. I enjoy spreading joy worldwide by doing what I love and continue to inspire others through dance, fashion, hardwork and staying true to myself. I am known for my spunky attitude, vibrant energy, facial expressions, and having good comedic timing.
With my various performances around the country, and gracing many stages such as “AfroNation Music Festival and Lighting in a Bottle”, I have taken the entertainment world by storm with my vibrant personality, fluid moves and creativity. I have landed featured roles as a choreographer, dancer, movement coach and casting director in music videos, tours, and shows with Chris Brown, Cardi B, J Balvin, Davido, Justine Skye, Rema, Afro B, Slim Jxmmi etc. My prowess landed me a featured interview with Voyage LA and a television appearance on the show “Let’s Make a Deal” with Wayne Brady on CBS, “So You Think You Can Dance” on FOX Network, and Kevin Hart “What The Fit” on LOL networks.
I continue to master my craft and spread my love of the arts and afrobeats which has given me the opportunity to host on the BET network. As a viral sensation; my videos have garnered hundreds of thousands of views and recognition from public figures including Missy Elliot, Tina Knowles, T-Pain, BET, and the very popular IG page “The Shaderoom”. I am focused in continuous growth and expanding my career and business.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Believing in yourself, hardwork and consistency. My advice would be staying true to yourself and use your time wisely. Don’t spend time comparing yourself to others, rather, use that time to perfect your craft. Don’t sit around waiting for opportunities to come knocking, you also have to put in the work. God help those who help themselves. Also, everyone has a turn, just wait for yours.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
