We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Noam Peri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Noam below.
Hi Noam, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I started writing at a young age, primarily due to my mother’s insistence on learning to read and write. Writing became an essential aspect of my life as I grew up. I wrote stories and songs, but I never took it any further.
During my teenage years, I often felt misunderstood. I came out as gay, which was challenging. I struggled in school, felt alone, and did not feel like I belonged. I couldn’t figure out why. Sometimes, when we feel sad, we listen to sad songs to help us feel better. However, when I did that, I realized that I couldn’t find any songs that described my feelings. I couldn’t find any songs that told my story. So, I started writing my songs. I wrote songs about love and heartbreak, songs about being a part of this world, escaping social norms, and being afraid to be alone. Suddenly, I found a place to be myself and express my feelings without fear. Writing was easier for me than talking.
I wanted to put my thoughts and feelings on paper, and I realized that other people like me might also feel alone and misunderstood. I decided to write and sing to show that it’s okay to be who we are and not follow what others think is right. The goal of my music is to make people realize that they are not alone and that others are going through what they are going through. I want my music to be a safe place where people feel like they belong. We are here, we exist, and our stories are important.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a musician and singer-songwriter who moved to LA almost two years ago to pursue my dreams. I enjoy writing the most because it allows me to express many emotions. Songwriting is an art that can convey many feelings and emotions in just a few words. When people tell me they can relate to my music, it means everything.
I recently released a new song titled “Darling, I Would.” It is a passionate expression of love, desire, and complexity that encapsulates the raw emotions of falling in love with someone you can’t have and the fear of expressing your feelings.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were that I was brave, believed in myself, and worked collaboratively with others while maintaining my voice to make a significant impact. Despite being afraid, I decided to move to Los Angeles, a place I had only seen in movies, as I believed I needed to pursue my dreams in a city full of hope. I knew something else was out there for me, a place where I was meant to be, but the thought of being alone in a foreign city, starting from scratch, and being far away from my loved ones was daunting. However, I trusted myself and followed my heart, convinced that I was destined to write and help people feel less alone and misunderstood.
Upon arriving in LA, I met various people, improved my writing and music skills, sought feedback, and found individuals who understood me without explaining myself. The experience taught me that life is unpredictable and things may not always turn out as planned. Nevertheless, the only way to discover this is by trying. Not taking a chance is worse than trying and failing.
I advise everyone to take that first step, as it is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and your capabilities. Although it may seem impossible at times, the feeling will pass. When you have faith in yourself, you can accomplish anything.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I caused a lot of trouble for my parents when I came out of the closet. My ADHD made it hard for me to keep up with my studies, so I missed a lot of classes. My mother found out about my poor attendance at a parent-teacher meeting at the end of the year.
I didn’t follow the path my parents might have wanted for me. Instead of finishing school, I pursued music. We had many misunderstandings and disagreements along the way, but my parents have always been supportive, without exception. Even when we fought at the beginning, they always trusted that I could go my own way and that everything would be fine.
Moving to LA was not easy for them, but they supported me from the start, despite their fears and concerns. They listen to my songs, share them on Facebook, and show them to their friends. I know they are proud of me and believe in me, even when I don’t believe in myself.
Their trust, belief, and support are the most significant things in my life, and I do not take them for granted. They are always there for me, and I will forever be grateful to them. I feel fortunate to have them in my life.
