We were lucky to catch up with Nora Chrissi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nora, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I have a lot of passion for music. It’s what I’ve always done. My dedication and drive comes from the love I have for music.
Also, growing up I saw my mother work two jobs to provide for me and my siblings. I think I grew so accustomed to watching that example, that it became natural for me to work as hard and have the drive I do. I have always had perfectionist tendencies that I think play a role in my work ethic as well. The nature of perfectionism is both delicate and confusing. Because details do matter in life, and perfectionism can accomplish so much. I think of Michael Jackson as a kid or some of the best athletes growing up, they dedicated so much time and developed perfectionist habits and became brilliant. I do think perfectionism leads to brilliance. But at the same time, life is not about being perfect and it’s impossible to be perfect and work extremely hard constantly. I’ve worked on balancing my work ethic and easing up on myself and having patience with myself while still accomplishing and meeting my own standards.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an R&B singer-songwriter and jazz pianist. I write and record mainly R&B and pop music that incorporates some jazz and soul influence. I currently perform at local venues, clubs, and restaurants. I have music all over the platforms, Spotify, apple, YouTube, TikTok etc. It’s been really enjoyable to have people reach out and say hey I found you on Spotify or hey I saw your performance last night, I’m a fan. I released my first single in 2022. It’s been amazing how many doors have opened very quickly to me so far.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Boldness/Confidence, creativity, and dedication play a huge role in my life. When I was studying music in college, a professor spoke to the class on how confidence plays a role in what we do. With artistry, you have to have the confidence backing what you do, especially if you’re doing something completely original. In life, so much of what we do has to be backed by confidence and self love. My ability to trust my own ear and my own opinion has become so vital to what I do and how I operate in the world/industry. Creativity is also a large part of what I thrive off. I’ve always naturally had a lot of musical ideas. So I always make sure to dedicate time to getting them out into the world and developing a plan for them. Creativity/Originality captures people’s attention because it’s something they haven’t heard or seen before. I’ve always been into style/fashion, so I’ve taken time to reflect on my own aesthetic as well, because person style is in itself an art form to go alongside music/dance. It’s also just something I enjoy. Lastly, dedication to my music has been a consistent factor throughout my life. I write all the time and am super focused on my goals of where
I want to be.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Some promotors don’t enjoy paying performers/artists. I’ve had some gigs where I’ve been paid good money to play sing/play keys. Bridal showers, restaurants, etc. But for some reason, some promotors at certain events across the city, don’t want to pay artists. When artists perform, they’re providing entertainment. The art becomes a service. So if you want to hire an artist or anyone for a service or event, you should be paying them. It should be the standard.
