We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nora Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nora, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
The pandemic forced us all to a collective pause and this led me to prioritize self-care and mental health for the first time in my life. My essential self care is to embrace the magic of the beach to recharge my creative battery followed by discovering new mom and pop restaurants to inspire my entrepreneurial spirit (and of course good food!). Beach and good food make for a perfect day.
It’s not your traditional spa day recharge (I like those too) but a quiet day at the beach + a good meal is effective and sometimes essential for R&R. The sound of ocean waves relax my stress and anxiety allowing my mind to clear and usher in creativity. I make some big decisions with my toes in the sand and also brainstorm marketing strategies and content while getting my summer glow on. The resilience of small business owners especially in the food industry inspires me to keep building and going for my dreams. Sometimes I can coax my kids to go with me and it creates an even more magical experience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I”m a soccer mom new to the tech world. I started as a mom blogger then spent 10+ years teaching celebrities and CEOs the ins and outs of social media and digital marketing. Working with so much creative talent coupled with personal frustration of the job process led me to create GigOut. GigOut is a job app for creative unicorns to find work they are passionate about while feeling true to themselves during the process. So many times we feel the pressure to conform to “professional” standards thus compromising who we really are. GigOut also helps hiring managers find talent in an efficient and innovative way.
I realized that most job platforms cater to brands and no one is looking out for the candidates. Finding a job can be a headache, but to feel devalued during the process is something we don’t talk about enough. As a creative during the job process, I’ve been asked to write (FREE) sample blog posts, create social media graphics, even design an entire PowerPoint presentation only to have my (FREE) ideas stolen and then ghosted by recruiters. Applying for jobs can be the equivalent to the worst speed dating experience everrr. Throw in the challenges that creative talent face, like explaining creativity in a cover letter and I knew I needed to help develop a better solution.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that are impactful for my journey are to be a forever student, lead with empathy, and network when you don’t have an ask.
Anytime you start something new there is a tremendous learning curve. I love to learn and in a world of digital information, so much info is right at our fingertips. Stay teachable, be a forever student, and this growth mindset will take you far.
My mom has modeled empathy my entire life. I learned that leading with empathy fosters trust, collaboration, and communication which helps people feel safe to voice concerns as well as new ideas. It also helps me as leader to understand challenges and perspectives of those around me. This allows me to be better at problem solving resulting in more balanced and sustainable decision-making.
Finally, so many people make networking about hitting you up with a jet stream and favors and asks. I like to network for the sake of getting to know people. Meeting others without an ask helps form genuine connections. Building relationships are integral for growth. Doing it from an unselfish vantage point is priceless.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My mom and dad are two of the most solid human beings I know. One of the most impactful things they did for me was to teach by example. As a latchkey kid, I was pretty independent. As an introvert, I am an intense observer so I always pay attention to small details.
There’s a popular social media meme that says, “I was raised to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO.” I learned this by watching my dad. I remember days I’d spend with him at his office and how he addressed everyone by their name, the security guard, receptionist, other C-Suite execs….it didn’t matter. He spoke to everyone with the same regard. As a teenager I wasn’t even aware that a business hierarchy existed in the corporate world because his professional respect was universal.
My mom is the most thoughtful and caring person I know, being an educator was such a great profession for her. I remember being at her school and someone went in her wallet and stole some money. I was floored that happened to her. She shrugged it off and said that if someone had to steal to get money then she figured they must need it more than her and that she hopes the money helped them. I still aspire to her level of compassion.
