We recently connected with Norica Canty and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Norica, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Although I did not realize this until years later, I come from a long line of black women who are resilient. First and foremost, I have to give credit to them for instilling something in me before I even knew how much I would need this trait. Like a lot of women, my resilience come from being let down, overlooked, and discarded. I dig deep in times of darkness and pull out energy and talent that I had no idea was even there.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Norica Canty. I am the owner of Canty’s Candies and Canteen (vending machines) and Nori Market. My first business, Canty’s Candies and Canteen started due to a bad break up. I decided to use therapy as a means to heal and got some of the best advice of my life. My therapist told me if was time for me to dig into what I like to do and things I want for my life. This was a major turning point in my life and also how TWO start up businesses came to be.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I adore when I have the opportunity to look back a think about the qualities and skill that were the most impactful on my journey. The 3 most impactful qualities are the following:
Resilience
Active Listening
Delegation
Resilience is needed for the hard times that will hit you back to back right before a breakthrough hits. Without resilience, you could easily quit before you have gotten started.
Active Listening is because you have to trust that the people you chose to keep around you are providing the best advice and motivation.
Delegation for peace of mind. As a small business owner, I am very protective over my investments. It is extremely hard for me to ask for help or allow someone else to touch my business. Learning to delegate help me in ways I never thought.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Books are the gateway into people and lives that we have not yet had the pleasure of.
My favorite book that caused me to have a pivot point in my life was Tuesdays with Morrie.
This book had me in tears as I listened to it on audibles as I got a workout in.
There is a man dying from ALS and there is another young man who visits him every Tuesday.
What is so beautiful about this book is the perspective. You get the perspective of a man dying as he shares his wisdom on love, family, and community over career and money. He speaks on the value of time and forgiveness. Only someone who knows their expiration date can speak candidly about how to live life fully and accepting death at the same time.
How different would life be if we all knew the day and time of our death. Would we go after our dreams with a fire and passion if we could see the time winding down?
Now I attempt to live my life as if the clock may stop tomorrow. Because, what if it does?
