We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Norma Molestina. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Norma below.
Hi Norma , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Self-Motivation:
I often find myself in situations where I need to be effective even when I’m working alone. In these moments, I seek inspiration to keep my motivation alive, whether it’s through reading, listening to podcasts, or reflecting on my achievements.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I work for a small but growing organization that focuses on creating a community, planning networking events, and helping the growing immigrant community to start their businesses.
One of the many things I enjoy about my work is meeting people. I love learning about their culture and hearing immigrant stories about how and why they decided to start a new life in another country. Going through the process of learning the culture, the language, and the system, and ultimately starting their businesses. What motivates them? Being able to help them in their journey is one of the most exciting feelings I experience in my job.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As an immigrant, one of the most important skills is to be able to speak another language.
Another important skill to have is the ability to adapt to different situations and environments. We won’t always find ourselves in the same circumstances; changes happen whether we like it or not. Therefore, being adaptable allows us to learn and grow more effectively
I try to surround myself with Inspiring People: As T. Harv Eker said, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” Seek out individuals who challenge and inspire you. These connections can significantly enrich your journey.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The most influential person in my life is undoubtedly my husband. We’ve been married for 31 wonderful years, and he has taught me so much—from reading the newspaper to cooking meals, and everything in between.
His influence extends beyond our home. He instilled in me the importance of professionalism, punctuality, and organization. His commitment to responsibility has inspired me to excel in all that I do. I am truly grateful for his guidance and support throughout our journey together.
