We recently connected with NovaKane and have shared our conversation below.
NovaKane , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by living in my truth. Many artists get hung up on the genre and content of their music because most think “what do people like/what’s current?” I never thought twice about that. My music is my therapy as well as a form of communication for me, so it’s never something forced or unauthentic.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an artist and musician from Detroit. I’ve been around music all my life, literally. Around the age of five is when I actually took an interest to an instrument (piano). Around grade school is when I experimented with more instruments ( trumpet, drums) including my voice and a microphone. I was in marching band in high school and in my second year I decided I wanted to switch from my horn to drumline (quads). Tenth grade is when I really got into the studio heavily, experimenting more vocally and lyrically. Since then, I’ve been on many stages in Atlanta, including the Georgia International Convention Center and the Georgia World Congress Center. The most exciting thing about what I do is meeting different people after shows or networking events. I enjoy and appreciate meeting people that resonate and relate with my music. I’d like people that support me to feel as though we’re homies, you know? As of any new drops, I’m always adding to the vault whether it’s lyrically or visually so keep your eyes on my socials for anything new!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three qualities I possess that were the most impactful in my journey are patience, prayer, and perseverance. You have to have patience because with anything you pursue you may get a few no’s and closed doors at first. I pray because without God I’m nothing. Whoever you pray to though, always ask for guidance because He can open doors that no man can close. Lastly, practice perseverance because simply displaying your passion for your art can seat you at tables in rooms that you haven’t even stepped foot into yet. Even if you fall ten times, you gotta get up eleven.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has been my stage presence. I started out performing at talent shows, open mics, and local events so I was only really performing for myself and my friends. Now though, I connect with the audience a lot more and have way more crowd control regardless if the audience is familiar with me or not.
