Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nury Castillo Crawford . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nury, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being a first generation immigrant there have been many times that I am the only one that looks like me in the room. I have been successful by being authentic, while building relationships. I look for ways that we can find similarities and find ways to connect.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been an educator for over 20 years. So empowering others through education is important to me. I value representation and advocate in championing what each of us brings to the table. Culture and language go hand in hand so incorporated that passion into 1010 PUBLISHING- a small press in GA that focuses on the dissemination of bilingual books and diverse authors. To add to that a year ago I also launched a nonprofit that focuses on celebrating biliteracy. We offer events and learning opportunities for our youth and their families. Literacy is so important and the most important variable in determining someone’s success. I am also a keynote speaker and presenter highlighting these topics and parental empowerment. Parental empowerment means connecting families with information and resources to support their children.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’d say my opportunity to secure college degrees has been a key component in ensuring my career. I found my passion for education very early on in life. So whatever it is you love and have passion for, I’d say go for it.
Next, networking is important. Not necessarily attending lots of events, but more like supporting organizations and engaging in events that you find connections with,
Lastly, I’d say stay in the know. I’ve taken classes and attended workshops and seminars on my own dime because staying up to date and relevant is important. Knowledge really is power.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
One of the most impactful things my parents did for me was love me. They believed in me and let me know consistently they’d always have my back. This is huge! Self esteem is grown little by little and with consistency. It is a recipe for winning at life. Believing in yourself is more than half the battle.
