Meet Nylah Cook

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nylah Cook. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Nylah, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I get my resilience from the strong lineage that I have, my mother and grandmother were entrepreneurs and singers. My grandmother selling Avon my grandfather owning a drywall business. My mom owning several salons with her sisters, and me seeing the capital reading her business books when I was bored at her shops. My father wasn’t an entrepreneur or a singer but his hustle was unimaginable and growing up around that inspired me to give back to them for all their hard work. That task has always kept me filled of determination and eternal resilience.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a multifaceted artist, and my work spans music production, engineering, rapping, and percussion. My music stands out because it’s created with deep feeling, emotion, and logic values that make it unique in a world where music is often driven by trends. While it’s true that everyone seems to be rapping these days, I focus on creating music that holds real value, not just something that can be bought. I go by the name Loco Ny, and as a female producer and musician, I’m proud to bring my passion to every track I make.

In addition to my music, I also run a clothing brand called Not Just Clothes. This is more than just a clothing line—it’s a movement. Our pieces feature powerful words that speak to those who are soft-spoken. Instead of using their voice, people can wear their stance and express themselves boldly through fashion.

I’m always excited about the opportunity to share my journey, and I’m committed to growing both my music and clothing brand. Whether it’s new releases, performances, or future collaborations, there’s always something fresh on the horizon, and I can’t wait to continue creating and inspiring.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most impactful qualities and skills in my journey have been determination, authenticity, and a combination of musical and business knowledge. Determination has been the driving force behind my ability to push through challenges and keep going even when faced with obstacles. Authenticity: Staying true to myself, my vision, and my values has kept me grounded and focused, allowing me to connect with others and remain confident in my decisions. Musical and Business Knowledge: My expertise in music theory, leadership skills, and knowledge of the music industry and business practices have been crucial in helping me navigate my creative and professional journey. My understanding of negotiation and people management has also played a key role in fostering positive relationships and advancing my goals. These skills and qualities have shaped me into who I am today. The complexity of reaching higher levels in both my music career and personal life was only possible because I continuously worked to sharpen these skills. For instance, my musical abilities and understanding of music theory gave me the foundation to create and produce. At the same time, my business acumen and leadership skills allowed me to build connections and manage the operations necessary for success. The process of refining these areas, especially through practice and experience, has been instrumental in completing my journey. My advice to anyone early in their journey is to never stop regardless of what others say. Stay committed to your goals and pursue them with everything you have. If you want to see your dreams, come to life and align more closely with your vision, do everything with passion, purpose, and faith. Lean on God’s guidance, stay humble, and never stop learning. It’s the continuous effort and growth that ultimately lead to success, and the journey itself is just as important as the destination.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was raising me in an environment filled with love, family, entrepreneurship, and faith. While there are aspects of my childhood that I may not fully agree with, I am incredibly grateful to my parents for always supporting me in every endeavor whether it was sports, music, or even hair. They encouraged me to pursue what others might consider impossible and to give my all to everything I do. My mom used to create outfits for my rap performances, and my dad would promote my music, showing their unwavering belief in me. Now, they continue to support my little sister in the same way. Growing up in Detroit, a city that’s both tough and welcoming, I was surrounded by hardworking individuals who hustled every day. This energy inspired me to always give my best and chase my dreams with everything I’ve got.
