Meet Odasha Dennis

We were lucky to catch up with Odasha Dennis recently and have shared our conversation below.

Odasha, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

When I first started my hairstyling career, I found myself being the only one in the room who looked like me more times than I can count. At first, it was intimidating. I felt like I had to work twice as hard to prove that I belonged, and honestly, it could feel isolating. But over time, I started to see that being the “only one” in the room wasn’t just a challenge—it was also an opportunity. It gave me the chance to stand out in a way that was uniquely mine, and I want to share what I’ve learned from those moments.

One of the first lessons I learned was to embrace my own perspective. Being different means you bring something new to the table—whether it’s your creativity, your ideas, or just the way you approach things. For me, that showed up in how I connected with my clients. I understood their unique needs, especially when it came to textured hair, and that became my superpower. Instead of seeing my differences as a disadvantage, I started to view them as my edge.

Another thing that really helped was building my confidence. When you’re in spaces where you’re the minority, it can feel like people are silently questioning your abilities. That’s when being prepared and knowing your craft inside and out becomes your secret weapon. I won’t lie—there were moments of doubt, but every time I showed up prepared and delivered, I proved to myself (and others) that I deserved to be there.

I also learned the importance of relationships. Feeling out of place doesn’t mean you can’t build meaningful connections. I focused on finding people who respected my work and shared my values. It’s not about trying to fit in or be like everyone else; it’s about creating authentic relationships that open doors and provide support. Those connections can make all the difference.

Most importantly, I realized how important it is to stay true to myself. It’s tempting to blend in, especially when you feel like you stand out too much. But I found that the more I leaned into my authenticity, the more people were drawn to me. My unique approach, rooted in my culture and experiences, became my signature. You don’t have to change who you are to belong—your authenticity is what makes you powerful.

Finally, I realized that most people are afraid to be different, and the real strength comes from leaning into your authentic self. No two people are the same, and that’s what makes you powerful. The more I embraced who I truly am, the more people were drawn to me, and my authenticity became my biggest strength.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m Odasha, a licensed hairstylist who took a leap of faith to leave my corporate career and follow my passion for hair artistry.
I specialize in creating styles that celebrate individuality, while ensuring my clients feel confident and seen.
I’m deeply inspired by the transformative power of hair and love helping people express their unique stories through their look. Having overcome challenges, including the loss of my parents, I channel resilience and authenticity into everything I do, both in life and in my craft.

The Hairvolutions brand could be defined as a movement or identity rooted in celebrating the transformative power of hair. It’s about embracing how hair can evolve with a person’s journey, whether it’s expressing their creativity, confidence, or individuality. Hairvolutions represents the idea that hair isn’t just a style—it’s a statement, a story, and a source of empowerment.

As a versatile hairstylist who specializes in all hair types. I love connecting with my clients on a deeper level—not just through what we have in common, but also through the beautiful differences that make each person unique. My passion for hair doesn’t stop behind the chair; I’m excited to share valuable hair tips and tricks through my content to help my clients care for their hair at home. Along with that, I create beauty and fashion content that aligns with my brand and values.

I look forward to expanding my reach through my social media platforms, incorporating hairstyling tips, beauty, and connecting fashion and lifestyle. As I continue to grow my brand, I’m eager to connect with people both in person and through their screens, offering inspiration and helping others embrace their personal beauty journey.

One of my big dreams is to attend New York Fashion Week and participate in Global Hair Shows worldwide.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Patience has played a significant role in my journey, by allowing myself to navigate the ups and downs with a steady mindset. Whether it was transitioning from my corporate career to becoming a hairstylist, learning new techniques, or building my brand, patience has helped me stay focused on the long-term goals rather than getting discouraged by the inevitable setbacks. It has given me the ability to learn from mistakes, adjust along the way, and trust the process as I continue to evolve in both my career and personal growth. Patience has allowed me to build meaningful connections with my clients and create valuable content at my own pace, without rushing the journey.

Dedication has been a driving force in my journey, pushing me to fully commit to my craft and personal growth. My decision to leave a corporate career and pursue hairstyling was fueled by my deep dedication to following my passion, even when it meant stepping into the unknown. This commitment has helped me continuously refine my skills, connect with clients on a deeper level, and stay consistent with my content creation.

Creativity / Content Creation: My passion for creativity isn’t just limited to hairstyling. My drive to create valuable content—whether for tips, fashion, or beauty—has allowed me to expand my reach and grow my brand beyond just working behind the chair.

If you’re just starting your journey, my advice would be to start by being consistent. Consistency is key in building your brand, growing your skills, and making progress. It’s easy to get caught up in instant results, but success takes time, and consistency will get you there. Next, write down your goals. Putting them on paper gives you clarity and keeps you focused. It’s not just about what you want to achieve, but also how you plan to get there. Share your goals with others—it holds you accountable and opens up opportunities for support and guidance. Most importantly, believe in yourself. There will be moments of doubt, but trust in your abilities and stay confident in your path. And find a mentor who can guide you. Having someone to learn from, who’s been through similar experiences, can make all the difference. They can offer advice, feedback, and encouragement when you need it most. Keep pushing, stay dedicated, and remember that every step forward is progress!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I would love to connect and collaborate with –

1. Beauty and Fashion Influencers: Influencers or content creators in the beauty and fashion space who share a similar vibe or audience. I could collaborate on hair tutorials, styling tips, or creating coordinated looks that combine hair, fashion, and makeup.

2. Hair Product Brands: I would love to work with hair care or styling product brands that align with my values and expertise. I would love to create more product reviews, tutorials using their products, or even co-create content that educates my audience on hair care routines and techniques.

3. Fashion Shows or Events: Collaborating with fashion brands or organizers of fashion events, like New York Fashion Week, local runway shows, would be a perfect way to blend my passion for hair with my love for fashion. I could offer hairstyling for models or create content around behind-the-scenes looks.

4. Fellow Hairstylists or Beauty Professionals: Team up with other hairstylists to co-host workshops, tutorials, or educational content for up-and-coming stylists or clients. This could also be a great opportunity to exchange tips, share different styles, and expand your network.

5. Lifestyle Content Creators: Collaborate with lifestyle creators who focus on self-care, wellness, or personal growth. I could partner on videos that highlight hair as part of a holistic approach to beauty and self-expression, which would align with my values of authenticity and empowerment.

6. Local Businesses or Pop-Up Shops: Partner with local fashion boutiques, beauty salons, or wellness centers to do pop-up events or joint promotions. This would allow me to connect with my local community while expanding your brand presence.
