Meet OG Kee

We were lucky to catch up with OG Kee recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi OG , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

Believe it or not, I have not always had a good work ethic. I’ve always been pretty smart and athletic. So as a child, good grades and excelling in sports came easy to me. I would finish my work early and get a great score on it. I would not workout and still be the fastest or most athletic when I went to school. Although these are great accomplishments for a kid, it can create a hinderance in your adult life. Since things came easy to me, it would be difficult for me to adjust when things were more challenging. I was scared to try new things that I had a possibility of failing at. I wouldn’t want to do it or I would stick to what I knew. There was never really consequences for this because I would still find a way to be successful. This habit did allow me to expand my creativity and taught me how to get things done regardless, but I fell short on working super hard and advancing in different aspects. When I started my music career I quickly learned there wasn’t a way to figure it out outside of hard work and dedication. For the first time, I got myself in a position where I had no choice but to crawl through the mud and climb over whatever was in my way. I had no outlets or shortcuts available in this new reality. I had to dig deep and admit to myself that I need to make serious changes about myself if I wanted my life to change. That’s where the work ethic started kicking into overdrive. I’m way more committed to figuring things out the “hard” way. I’m not as scared to fail. I’m okay with being told no. I’m okay with not being the leader of the pack. I sometimes still struggle with procrastination and sticking to personal deadlines, but I’ve grown and I’m constantly working on myself to reveal the woman I was placed on this Earth to be. I’m using my shortcomings has a learning lesson to prevail.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

From school teacher, to esthetician, now a rapper, I have ventured across the board following the path of my dreams. I’ve never been able to stay in one box too long which has fueled my creativity. Music being the most consistent thing in my life, I have found my passion in it. I use music to vent about my daily obstacles, my success, my failures, and to tell the stories I have witnessed or experienced. It has been a diary and therapy for my mental health. Over the last year, I have travelled to multiple states and many cities performing my art. I have fallen in love with being on the stage and expressing myself to those who can receive it and appreciate it. I find writing music to be the vent session and the performance to be the celebration of releasing those emotions. As a songwriter, I love that I have created a versatile discography relative to the versatility of everyday life which can be heard throughout my album, Unexpected Flow. I plan to continue my journey to reach the heights of whatever music has in store for me. I have created a vlog series on my YouTube channel (@ogkee5) to document the ups and downs I experience behind the scenes as well as the blood, sweat and tears I put into my music. I plan on expanding my audience across the nation through new music videos, performances, and new music releasing throughout the year. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Your life will change with the 3 C’s. Confidence, commitment, and consistency.
Confidence is the most important quality to have when pursuing your dreams. I’ve found it to be very difficult to convince others your art is worthy if you don’t believe in it 100% yourself. Whenever you take your guard down and trust in your gift, your life will change as your audience grows. Learning to have confidence in everything I do has allowed me to walk into rooms with my head held high. Whether I was given a yes or a no, when I walked out of the room my head was still high. This will build a strong foundation for your journey and allow your passion to properly shine through and become the success story you’ve dreamed of. Confidence can be difficult to master but being committed to your passion will give you a boost. Commitment is the art of choosing you everyday. If you decide to get 1% better everyday, you’ll be 365% better than the person you were the previous year. The saying “Slow and steady wins the race” is a great quote to reference whenever you feel discouraged. A little goes a long way, there’s no need to rush greatness. Choosing yourself everyday is the consistency needed to make the big difference in your life. Working towards your goals “here and there” will reward you “here and there” as well. Daily grind will bring daily achievements! Write your goals down and stick to it. The best way to master the 3 C’s is by giving yourself grace. No one is perfect and following your dreams isn’t an easy task. Love on yourself and remember you can only live one day at a time. Soak in the moment and focus on what you can change today!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I have to give flowers to my father. He has been my rock on this journey and all throughout my life. I confide in him with everything I do because I know he has my back and is going to tell me the truth no matter what. I appreciate that about him because it motivates me to be exactly who I am and inspire to become. He constantly pushes me to follow my dreams and not to worry about things I can’t control. Since I was young, he has given me advice on how to maneuver through life’s obstacles. Honestly, I would have gave up on my career a long time ago if I didn’t have his guidance. I appreciate him for pouring into me and thank him for getting me this far. I’ll always acknowledge him as the reason I’ve excelled in music and in life. Thank you dad!
