We were lucky to catch up with Ogechi Okwara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ogechi , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
How I Found My Purpose as an Event & Wedding Planner
I didn’t wake up one day and decide to become an event or wedding planner; it unfolded through obedience, faith, and service. My purpose began with God placing a vision in my heart long before I fully understood it. I found myself drawn to moments that brought people together, celebrations, milestones, and memories that deserved to be honored with intention and excellence.
As I stepped into event planning, my clients became the confirmation. Each event wasn’t just about décor or logistics; it was about carrying someone’s joy, stress, and expectations with care. I listened deeply to their stories, their dreams, and sometimes their fears. When I saw relief replace overwhelm, and joy fill a room at the end of a celebration, I knew this was more than a skill; it was a calling!
There were challenges along the way: learning to trust my instincts, finding my voice as a professional, and believing that my work truly mattered. But through prayer, perseverance, and showing up consistently for my clients, my confidence and clarity grew. God refined my purpose through service, and my clients reflected it back to me through their gratitude and trust.
DEServing Events was born from that realization that people deserve to have their most meaningful moments handled with excellence, compassion, and intention. My purpose as a planner is not just to create beautiful events, but to serve others wholeheartedly, honor God through my work, and help people celebrate life’s milestones in a way that feels truly deserving.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an event and wedding planner who specializes in creating intentional, meaningful celebrations that honor life’s most important moments. Through my business, DEServing Events, I plan and design experiences that are not only beautiful but also deeply personal, events that reflect each client’s story, values, and vision.
What excites me most about my work is the ability to serve people during milestone moments, weddings, birthdays, and celebrations that mark new chapters. Event planning is more than logistics and aesthetics for me; it’s about stewardship. I carry my clients’ trust seriously and work to remove stress so they can be fully present and joyful in their moment. Seeing a client breathe easier, smile wider, or feel truly seen is what makes this work special to me.
My brand is rooted in purpose, excellence, and service. The name DEServing Events reflects my belief that every client deserves an experience handled with care, integrity, and intention. I approach each event with faith, professionalism, and attention to detail, ensuring that no moment feels rushed, overlooked, or ordinary.
In addition to my work as a planner, I am also an adjunct professor, which allows me to mentor, teach, and pour into others professionally. That role strengthens my planning practice by keeping me grounded, organized, and continuously learning.
Currently, I am focused on expanding my brand visibility, refining my client experience, and growing DEServing Events in ways that remain aligned with my purpose: creating meaningful celebrations while honoring God, my clients, and the stories entrusted to me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: faith-led purpose, adaptability, and genuine service.
First, faith-led purpose has been my foundation. Knowing why I do this work keeps me grounded during challenges and confident in moments of growth. My advice for those early in their journey is to get clear on your “why.” Whether it’s faith, passion, or service, anchor your work in something deeper than trends or comparison; it will sustain you when things feel uncertain.
Second, adaptability and problem-solving have been essential. Event planning is unpredictable, and success often depends on how calmly and creatively you respond when things don’t go as planned. For those starting out, I encourage you to embrace every experience as a learning opportunity. Say yes to practice, observe seasoned professionals, and don’t be afraid of mistakes; they sharpen your skill set more than perfection ever will.
Finally, a heart for genuine service has made the biggest difference. Clients remember how you made them feel long after the event ends. Listening closely, showing empathy, and treating every event as if it matters deeply because it does, builds trust and longevity in this industry. My advice is to lead with care and integrity; skills can be taught, but character and service create lasting impact.
Together, these qualities have shaped not just my business, but the way I show up for my clients and my calling. For anyone beginning their journey, focus on developing both your craft and your character; success grows where purpose and preparation meet.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who trusts me to plan and execute the perfect event while openly sharing their vision. They value collaboration, clear communication, and professionalism, and they understand that a successful event is built on both trust and teamwork.
They appreciate expertise and are confident in allowing me the creative space to bring their ideas to life, while knowing their voice is always heard. Ideal clients respect the planning process, value intention and excellence, and are excited to be fully present while I handle the details.
Ultimately, the best partnerships are with clients who see me not just as a planner but as a trusted guide, someone who honors their vision and elevates it into an unforgettable experience.
