We recently connected with Olivia Korosak and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
When a musician first begins learning an instrument, we develop some form of structure through a practice routine. Having that pattern instilled at a young age has aided in my ability to be a freelance musician by understanding the importance of daily practice. I also feel that continuously approaching my work as a never ending student allows excitement for new discoveries and keeps my curiosity and creativity open.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a freelance composer who writes music for film, tv, theatre and ensemble. I absolutely love what I do and have had the pleasure to work with many talented writers, directors, actors and post production teams. I feel what is so important about a career in composing is that the output from composing or any career in the arts is so unique. There are no two composers that will create the same tune, or perceive the same scene in a film when scoring. I love how I get to bring stories to life musically and with each project I gain new knowledge and ideas that I can add to my musical toolbox.
I left my job as a teacher in 2022 to pursue composition full time. This pivot was full of excitement, fear, opportunity and much uncertainty. I knew if I wanted to pursue music creation I needed to take this step and dive fully into this choice. Over the past two years I have worked on compelling and fulfilling projects and I look forward to future stories I get to bring to life musically.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Time management, listening to music and playing your instrument are three areas I feel any composer would agree are important to focus on when entering this career. Time management is essential for any job, and as a freelancer having a schedule and goals you are looking to hit each week allow you to feel more organized and stay on task.
Listening to music seems like an easy task, but I have learnt over the past year how important it is for me to properly listen to a piece of music. This is a great educational tool that often inspires me with my own writing from hearing how other composers create melodies, harmonize, instrument combinations and so much more.
I feel when I began creating a daily practice routine of sitting at my piano and playing as if I were back learning pieces for my weekly lessons has helped me gain confidence in my compositions. When I play new pieces I analyze and study what the composer did, which expands my toolbox and serves as another area of inspiration.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I love working with writers and directors who are looking to make new discoveries with their projects. When collaborators send me a mix-mash of inspiration music that encompasses multiple genres I get excited with the palette I am provided and the idea of creating a hybrid from different musical sounds. Making a film, musical, or concert is a highly collaborative process and when the team I get to work with is excited to devise and explore as we work, it makes the process extremely fulfilling!
