Meet Olivia Nunn

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Olivia Nunn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Olivia, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in my upbringing and experiences. Growing up in an environment where hard work was not just valued but considered non-negotiable has significantly shaped who I am today. My 20 years of service in the US Army as an army officer, including combat experiences, further reinforced these values of discipline, commitment, and perseverance.

As a first-generation Korean American, my parents instilled in me the belief that nothing in life comes for free and that I must work hard to achieve my goals. This principle has been ingrained in me since childhood, as I witnessed my parents lead by example. My father’s military service in the Army, subsequent venture into running his own construction company, and my mother’s dedication to raising me and my siblings while juggling multiple responsibilities were powerful illustrations of the importance of hard work and determination.

My upbringing taught me that success is not merely handed to me; it is earned through dedication, persistence, and a willingness to put in the necessary effort. Whether helping with odd jobs, advertising my father’s business, or managing household tasks, I learned early on the value of rolling up my sleeves and getting the job done.

These foundational hard work and perseverance principles have undoubtedly influenced my approach to life and work. They have shaped my work ethic, instilling in me a sense of responsibility and a commitment to seeing tasks through to completion. As I navigate my entrepreneurial journey and continue to make a difference in the world, I carry the lessons learned from my upbringing – the belief that hard work is not just a requirement but a pathway to success and fulfillment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful: discipline, prioritizing people, and the unwavering drive to never give up.

Discipline has been instrumental in my success. It’s the ability to stay focused, organized, and committed to my goals even when faced with challenges or distractions. Developing discipline requires consistency, setting clear priorities, and holding oneself accountable. My advice for those early in their journey is to establish routines and systems that support productivity, set achievable goals, and cultivate a mindset of resilience.

Putting people first has been a guiding principle throughout my career. Whether it’s my team, clients, or stakeholders, prioritizing their needs, well-being, and success has always been paramount. Building strong relationships and fostering a culture of empathy and collaboration have been vital. I advise leveraging relationships and seeking mentorship from those who have walked the path before you. Be humble, listen actively, and learn from others’ experiences.

The drive to never give up has propelled me despite adversity or setbacks. It’s the resilience to keep pushing forward, adapt and innovate, and persevere in pursuing my goals. Embracing failure as part of the process and learning from it has been crucial. My advice is to recognize that failure is inevitable but also an opportunity for growth and learning. Take care of your mental health and well-being along the way. Unplug, recharge, and approach challenges with a fresh perspective.

In addition to these qualities, I’ve found networking to be invaluable. Every connection, whether big or small, has the potential to create opportunities and impact. Never miss a chance to network; always prioritize integrity in your interactions. Your reputation and integrity are invaluable assets that can open doors and build trust.

Ultimately, placing people first, maintaining discipline, and persevering in adversity are essential for success. By nurturing these qualities and continually striving to improve, individuals can navigate their journey with purpose, resilience, and integrity.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle or challenge I am currently facing is growing my company, particularly finding the right clients. As I mentioned, the last quarter of 2023 saw a significant downturn in my company’s revenue, and rebuilding in 2024 has been a journey. While I recognize that this challenge is not unique to me, navigating a crowded marketplace and standing out amidst fierce competition presents its difficulties.

One approach I am taking to overcome this challenge is to focus on differentiation. Instead of relying solely on traditional marketing and advertising methods, which may not be feasible given budget constraints, I am leveraging my unique strengths and offerings to set my company apart. By highlighting the value I bring to clients through personalized services, innovative solutions, and a track record of success, I aim to attract the right clients who align with my company’s vision and values.

I am also actively seeking networking opportunities and forging strategic partnerships within my industry. Building relationships with other professionals and organizations expands my network and opens doors to potential clients through referrals and collaborations. By demonstrating my expertise, professionalism, and dedication to client satisfaction, I hope to earn the trust and confidence of prospective clients.

Furthermore, as I expand my services beyond strategic communications into event planning, I am tailoring my outreach efforts to target specific industries or sectors with a demonstrated need for my expertise. By identifying niche markets or underserved areas, I can position my company as a valuable resource and solution provider, thus attracting clients seeking specialized services.

While finding the right clients in a competitive marketplace may seem daunting, I am approaching it with determination, creativity, and a proactive mindset. By focusing on differentiation, networking, and targeted outreach efforts, I am confident I can overcome this obstacle and continue growing my company in the months and years.
