Meet Olyn Moon

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Olyn Moon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Olyn, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

It came from when I went into the military. It was hard for me to let anyone read anything of mine before that. I let one of my roommates read a story I was writing while in basic training and they wanted more of it. They even ended up drawing the cover of my first book I self-published because they like it so much.

After that it made me realize that maybe I was at the very least decent enough at writing that it could find it’s own niche with an audience. Now it’s just a matter of finding that audience in a world saturated with self-published authors on amazon. Now at the very least I know my words can entertain people.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am both a self-published author and published by a small indie publisher named Sthenotype. I have been writing since I was in grade school. My earliest memories are of writing a few page short stories that have been lost to the winds of time. Then as I got older that turned into longer stories until I eventually completed a set of stories that would be my first series written, but never shared when I was about sixteen or seventeen. I had been rewriting it through the years as I got better as a writer. It wasn’t the first story I self-published because I wanted it to be perfect and to do justice to what inspired me most growing up. Anime.

The most exciting thing about being an author is creating these characters that people enjoy. Hearing that people want to see more of the characters is something that will always make me smile.

As of 2024 I have five books out. Two of them I released this year. The first is Blood and Moonlight Legacy of Embers is the one that is published by Sthenotype Publishing and came out in the summer. It’s a gothic horror romance novel with werewolves and vampires set in modern day California.

The second is called Shadows and Vengeance The Saga of Rekka Hoshi which is the novel I have been working on since I was sixteen. It’s about a teenager who was left for dead and wakes up with no memories of how he got where he was. Slowly the memories return to him as his past comes back to haunt him.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Willingness to improve. If you’re creating your own world making sure you keep everything written down in notes about it. Editing as you go.

It also might be a little cliche but watching, and reading a lot of different genre of things can help a lot. There can be a lot of overlap in genres no matter what you write. Science fiction can have a bit of fantasy in it. Q exists in Star Trek after all. The more you read you can help shape your own writing as well and help you improve.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always open to collaborate with folks. Be it writing a story together, which I have in the works with three other people, or even doing a comic with someone. Even someone to partner with to make covers of upcoming books. Creating covers is the hardest part of getting a book out for me.
