Meet Ontaneque Ottrix

We recently connected with Ontaneque Ottrix and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ontaneque , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Growing up in California, a true melting pot of cultures, significantly shaped my self-confidence and self-esteem. The rich diversity around me fostered open-mindedness, allowing me to appreciate varied perspectives and experiences. This exposure broadened my horizons and ignited a sense of creative freedom that I didn’t fully grasp until I became a college student athlete, mother, supporter of my household, and business owner.

However, moving from the West Coast to the East Coast in the middle of my senior year of high school was a major shift. This transition not only altered my future plans but also presented a culture shock that challenged my sense of belonging. Initially, I felt out of place, navigating a new environment while grappling with the pressures of senior year. Yet, this experience became a turning point for me. It forced me to adapt quickly, fostering resilience that would serve me well in the years to come.

As I navigated the complexities of motherhood, I realized how essential my open-mindedness was in nurturing my children. Embracing new ideas and approaches reinforced my belief in my own capabilities. Life’s challenges, including the shift to a new coast, taught me to bounce back and adapt, significantly bolstering my confidence. Each setback became a learning opportunity, further enhancing my self-esteem.

In summary, the combination of growing up in a diverse environment and overcoming the challenges of moving has been instrumental in developing my self-confidence and self-esteem. These experiences empowered me to embrace my identity and inspire others along the way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my journey, the three most important qualities that have been impactful are open-mindedness, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning. These qualities have not only shaped my self-confidence and self-esteem but have also guided me through significant life changes, such as moving from the West Coast to the East Coast in the middle of my senior year of high school.

Open-Mindedness: Growing up in California, I was surrounded by diverse cultures and perspectives that cultivated my open-mindedness. This quality allowed me to embrace new ideas and approaches, which has been invaluable in both my personal and professional life. The culture shock of relocating during such a pivotal time in my life challenged me to adapt and appreciate different viewpoints. For those early in their journey, I encourage you to seek out diverse experiences and viewpoints. Engaging with others from different backgrounds can expand your horizons and foster creativity.

Resilience: Resilience has been crucial in building my confidence and self-esteem. Life’s challenges, including my move across the country, often serve as stepping stones rather than obstacles. When faced with setbacks, I’ve learned to adapt and persevere. This quality was particularly vital during my transition to the East Coast, where I had to navigate new social dynamics and academic pressures. My advice for those starting out is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Each experience, whether positive or negative, can teach you something valuable about yourself and your abilities.

Commitment to Continuous Learning: In my various professional roles, I’ve prioritized ongoing education. Staying informed about health trends and best practices has not only enhanced my skills but also instilled confidence in my expertise. This commitment to learning became even more critical as I balanced being a college student athlete, a mother, and a business owner. For anyone embarking on their journey, I recommend dedicating time to learn and grow in your field. Attend workshops, read extensively, and connect with mentors who can guide you.

In summary, developing open-mindedness, resilience, and a commitment to continuous learning has been transformative for me. These qualities have empowered me to navigate life’s changes, including my significant transition to the East Coast, and have fostered my growth and self-discovery. Embrace your journey with these qualities, and you’ll find yourself on a path of personal and professional development.
