We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Orla Ananda a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Orla, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I didn’t! I dont think it ever goes away, at any stage of your career. I just made peace with it, made it my friend and now we get alone. I think if you look at imposter syndrom as something motivating, a force to get better, it can work in your favor. I always try to learn something new, challening myself with hrader projects, new creative ideas. My imposter syndorm will always be there, I might as well get something great out of it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Orla Ananda Murals was born when I moved to Florida from NYC a couple of years ago and couldn’t find a job that paid enough. By that time I had enough expirience at 9-5 job and was ready for a change. It started as a passionate hobbe and rather quickly became a full time job and a business.
I treat art as business. I think it’s very important. If I rely my income, my lifestyle and my daughter’s upbringing on creating art, I better make the most of it. I am a commercial artist and I love it. I love to create for people, for businesses and companies. Through these creative collaborations the real magic is born!
At Orla Ananda Murals we design and create unique site-specific art concepts, murals and installations in private, commercial and public spaces. We transform spaces and help our clients to make an art statement, drive commerce and revenue while strengthening their sense of identity. Our clients range from big national development companies to small provate businesses. Each space can be elevated throught mural art, and each project is unique in it’s own way.
I guess that’s the most exciting part of this job, we never get bored.
In a long term, my team and I are thriving to become a global creative house with a strong network of leading contemporary artists providing design, curatorial, and production services for public and privately commissioned art. To collaborate internationally with cities, community organizations, sensible brands, and institutional spaces.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I am a hard worker, in anything that I do and I don’t give up until I know I have applied my absolute best. There are times when I am in front of computer for 12 hours, designing or go without break for days compelting a mural. Hard work pays off. That’s the only way in my opinion to get anywhere.
I am very detail oriended. Which speaks for quality of my work. I pay attention to everything, even if I am sure the client won’t ever notice this presicion, I wont be done unless it’s absolutely perfect. Same goes with pitch presentations, client communications, marketing, etc. Qaulity is everything.
I have a true vision of my future, I know what I want. I guess it’s detemination. Even if I dont see how to get there yet, I would try different approaches and scenarios until I make progress.
I guess my main advice would be get up and do something right now. Don’t wait for the perfect day, inspiration, the right opportunity. If you want something, take a baby step towards it right now. And then another step tomorrow, and so on. Building a career is a habbit. Make your work your daily habbit. Nothing changes of nothing changes. We are what we do every day. Todays action determines your future and your success.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My main challenge right now is team building. I know and feel that my company needs to expand but I seem to struggle to delegate a lot of my work. I feel like I don’t have time for a lot of things that I want to do and yet hesitate to expand my team. I know its a common problem for a lot of business owners. I think the next right step would be to have a partner who would take on all the business, admin, sales side of the company and I can apply my creative skills an vision at most. Afterall, this is my strongest suit.
