Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Oshi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Oshi, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I think I inherited the resilience from my Mother . She has been my role model growing up . Strong and righteous she had always faced every challenge of life very gracefully and took every decision single-handedly and with conviction. Sharing her journey and being her only daughter made me experience life very closely from a very young age. Somehow it was engraved in me never to give up till I’ve tried the last straw. Life through its myriad trials made me believe that when a door closes many more open up. It made me adopt a never-say-never attitude which by far helped me in every phase of my life. What i feel is no matter what situation you are in you should have an unwavering belief in yourself,be sincere in your efforts, give your best, and have faith that can see you through all challenges. We are all here with a purpose and all we have to do is fulfill it with our duties ,
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
A lover of visual and performing art I grew up appreciating and learning dance, art, and literature. Being an English major, I had indulged in poetry reading and writing however professional life started in the hospitality industry after my post-graduation in public relations, meandering through finance and banking which helped me work with some great brands in corporates like the ITC Sheraton, Citigroup, HSBC, JP Morgan Chase and the likes. However, there was always a part of me that found solace in delving into art. After coming to the US from India, I finally decided to take up my hobby more seriously and enrolled myself with artists to learn watercolor and Oil paintings. it was through sheer social media postings of my art to get some critiquing on my work, that a nonprofit approached me ,The Lily Foundation of North Dallas wanted to have my paintings auctioned at their Annual Dinner Gala. I brought in 12 of my works 9 of which got auctioned off at the Gala. That began my journey of giving back to society through my art. I collaborated with various organizations like The Scottish Rites, The Millhouse, The Heard Craig Meusium of Arts, Baylor Scott and White , Kid Care, Allen, Art Club of Mckinney TX, Craig Ranch, Sewa Foundation, Orchid Circle in their various philanthropic endeavors through my art.
Being a mother of 2 I loved kid interactions and working with kids and had a stint as a Preschool Lead teacher in our early days in McKinney TX. At the first opportunity after we bought our new home I established my home studio and soon started my Oshi’s Artscape journey in 2015 with 2 students and through word of mouth our student base grew to over 100 in the past 9 years. I loved seeing my kids’ art displayed in several libraries, galleries, museums, and school tournaments and getting their true appreciation and awards. Though I love for my kids to take part in various art events and competitions we never let our school lose its focus on its vision…. Delve in art, indulge, dream create. Our studio still remains a happy place for the after-school enthusiasts or a nook to unwind for the more mature, We also began doing paint parties and team-building events for corporates, our most coveted Kids art Camps , birthday paint events, etc which made it a vivacious and fun journey. Covid hit us on 2020, we were compelled to shut our doors to in-person classes . We were bound to be more reliant on technology. Thus came the time to self teach online art instruction . With some initial teething glitches, we resumed our sessions but online.the biggest positive that the pandemic brought to the studio was our reach beyond Texas across states … now we have students logging in to our sessions from Atlanta California Austin etc.
And the other thing it helped me with was to recognize what i enjoy and value more so I took up Art full-time in place of being a Banker by the day and an Artist by night.
I went ahead and became a Certified Therapeutic Art Life Coach and started holding various art events including corporate workshops and setting up classes for adults. Soon the Brand Oshi’s Art evolved where the mission was to deal with everything Artsy; be it curating and selling art; teaching and holding art events at Oishi’s Artscape; creating fashion, designs through Oshi’s Wearable Art Platform
Currently, I am serving as a Member Chair of the Art Club of McKinney the oldest club of Texas and am also the Chair for their Student Art Show as well. . My studio partners with City of Allen’s annual Art Extravaganza to provide a platform to bring forward the artistic talents across Collin County
Through Oshi’s wearable art, I try to give a global platform to rural Artists and Artisans with various collaborative efforts making it a progressive sustainable brand by itself making it a place where Creatives meet Tradition.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think what most impacted my journey was my being resilient and never giving up on hope . Also my zeal of learning and acquiring new skills in art and its various techniques always broadened the horizon of my undertakings. i am always keen and finding ways to learn be it from various master classes workshops or even networking which helps me enhance my knowledge through rich experience.
What I feel helped me and would help others in their journey is to keep an open mind to absorb learn and grow wherever there is an opportunity and to know that nothing is a waste of time that helps you develop or hone your skills. And most importantly embrace change and evolve and never resist the new.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My Husband Promith has been my rock and my push to reach out and flourish always being there and lending a hand when I needed it. My mother has always been my support and inspiration who helped me believe in myself no matter what . My son and my daughter play an important part in whatever I do. Being good kids they allowed me to invest the amount of time and effort to my passion that was needed .Also, they are able to always bring in a fresh new perspective to an idea that I bring to the table.
In fact my greater family back home with an overpowering influence of strong reflective women helped tremendously to build my character .All that I have achieved through time, and the challenges i could overcome would not have been possible without my family’s support.
