We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Owen Hunt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Owen , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose through trial and error. It was something that was gnawing at me at a deep level and when I started to question what it might be, I felt like I needed to figure out in a quick hurry. I was in a place where I didn’t know what I wanted to do or who I was right around age 30 and I felt like I wasn’t coming close to meeting my potential.
I was questioning the world and attempting to discover my place in it when I came across a very interesting, mystical book called ‘Reality Transurfing’. In the book, the author said that when you find your true goal, it would turn your life into a celebration. I was compelled and inspired to figure out what my purpose was and there weren’t specific instructions laid out in the book but it held some incredible insights that allowed me to find specific techniques to begin to understand what my purpose was.
I researched high and low from books by Steve Pavlina, to Ancient Japanese concepts such as IKIGAI to discover my purpose, and through a lot of trial and error, dozens of exercises, and consistent journaling I was able to uncover how I fit into the world and what I was here to do. That process continues to become more and more clear but having a fundamental understanding of my purpose has been the most necessary ingredient for direction, motivation and most importantly self-acceptance.
Because of my struggle with this concept, it has become the first thing I focus on when working with clients and has allowed me to curate useful tools and present them in a course for people to be able to discover it for themselves. I became so passionate about this area of life that I have made the course available on my Patreon page, for free.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a Blue Collar Mystic – a shortcut for people who want to understand esoteric ideas and concepts in a practical way. I focus on helping people identify their true goal and implementing it on a practical level. I work with clients who are high achievers and want to embody their most authentic selves, building a lifestyle that suits them and giving their gift to the world so that they have an impact that is win – win – Win.
I have my hands in a lot of projects but my main passion is helping people define and pursue their true goal because it was the key for me to find my path and a great way to give back.
I have a Youtube channel (Bootsy Greenwood) and a Podcast (Blue Collar Mystics) where I discuss ideas from many of the great Spiritual and Esoteric books and break down the concepts in them so that anyone can understand and implement them.
I’m also a comedian and a live event producer. I produce comedy shows and charity events as well as run an agency. I’m the founder of Athens Comedy and a co-founder of the Athens Comedy Fest. I’ve really enjoyed making connections in the community and building partnerships with amazing brands and people who are focused on adding to the quality of life in Athens, Georgia and beyond.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Self-Reliance
2. Resilience
3. Integrity
The three most important qualities from my standpoint are Self-reliance, Resilience and Integrity.
The first time I heard the term Self-Reliance, I thought it was about farming. But when I read the essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, I was smitten. I think it’s the best essay in recorded history. He states in the book that even if it is his whim that is leading him to do something, he has to follow it. Even if it doesn’t seem like it is leading anywhere useful at first, it will likely give way to another insight that will eventually open unseen doors. There are some incredible quotes in that book. One of the many is – “I shun father and mother and wife and brother when my genius calls me. I would write on the lintels of the door-post, Whim. I hope that it is somewhat better than whim at last, but we cannot spend the day in explanation.”
He also illustrates that he has to be himself and allow authenticity to be the highest authority in his life.
At one point in the book he’s recounting a conversation with a friend of his from the church and says, “I remember an answer which when quite young I was prompted to make a valued adviser who was wont to importune me with the dear old doctrines of the church. On my saying, What have I to do with the sacredness of traditions, if I live wholly from within? my friend suggested, – “But these impulses may be from below, not from above.” I replied, ‘They do not seem to me to be such; but if I am the devil’s child, I will live then from the devil.’
Resilience has to be one the most important qualities because it’s essential to keep going even when we doubt ourselves. I’m reminded of a quote by Calvin Coolidge – “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
I don’t think it could be said any better than that.
The third quality is integrity. You have to follow through with whatever you pursue. If you quit on someone, they’ll never forget it and if you quit on yourself, you’ll never forget it. Your reputation follows you, especially in this digital age, everywhere you go. It’s critical to keep your word and do what you say. You’ll have haters no matter what but if you stick to your values, even the haters will have to respect the fact that you stayed true.
In the 48 laws of power, Robert Greene lays this out as law #5. He says, “Reputation has a power like magic: With one stroke of its wand, it can double your strength….or take it all away. You must never forget this fact. You must never forget the importance of reputation. You must protect it all costs. Because if you protect it now, in the future it will protect you…”
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who will do the work. That’s the only requirement. What makes a great client from a coaches’ point of view is working with someone who will do what they already know within themselves they must do. From there, we create processes that will be the most efficacious.
When I hire a coach, I follow them blindly and go over and above what they ask me to do. I’m looking for the same level of commitment from my clients.
We’re here to help you but you have to take the necessary actions in order to get results. If my mentor told me to run backwards blindfolded into a burning building, I’d just do it. I wouldn’t even ask a single question. I trust that she can see an objective path that I’m blind to. That’s why I hired her and you can see for yourself why I trust her so much if you look her up. Her name is Courtney Johnson and her IG handle is @courtlynnjohnson – it is because of her guidance that I’ve grown as much as I have in the past few months.
If it wasn’t for her, I’d be struggling with my business and way less clear about what to do. She’s never pushed me to do anything that wasn’t beneficial for me and every time we have a call she lays out clear action steps for me to follow.
I take those steps and the results come. The same is what I expect from my clients. If you’re not willing to do the work, we’re wasting each other’s time.
