We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Owen Solomon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Owen, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a producer and director, trying new things is the best way for me to keep my creativity alive. Living in Los Angeles, it’s easy to get caught up in the fast paced lifestyle, competing with other people, getting fed the same material etc. Trying new things I find is the simplest way to go back to square one, and spark your curiosity again. Not only does it broaden your perspective, it allows you to ask questions about what you are doing, why you are doing what you do, and why you want to continue doing what you want to to. Working as a creative and breaking out of your own perspective can be a scary leap. But trying new things and taking risks is something I believe all artists and creatives must deal with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As of now, I’m working on building and developing my own production company, alongside a good friend of mine, Dmitriy Usov. In January of 2024, we began Zero Void Films, a full service film production company, specializing in narrative and commercial content. Lucky for me, I find this company a perfect way to express both my artistic side, as well as my business fix.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Experimentation, confidence, and self drive. For anyone starting off in their careers in any field, I feel as if these three qualities and skills, are extremely important. Experimentation helps find new ideas and allows yourself to grow and gain more experience. Confidence allows yourself to believe in what you do, and can help you sell yourself in any profession. This is extremely important when it comes to networking and if anything, to help you keep going, which leads into the last quality. Self drive. Beginning your journey isn’t easy, but self drive is extremely important to help you go further, try new things and improve your overall well being. These are all qualities I call upon everyday, and have by no means perfected. When you believe in yourself, you can make anything happen!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Any time I ever feel overwhelmed, I try and take a step back. This is probably a cliche answer but doing whatever makes you happiest and allows your mind to breathe. It’s so easy to get caught up about things happening all around us. Thinking about the future induces worry into anyone. Stay grounded, live in the moment, and remind yourself that you are just along for the ride.
