We were lucky to catch up with Pablo Murillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Pablo, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up, I witnessed first-hand the hard work and determination it took for my parents to provide for our family as immigrants from Mexico. This upbringing instilled in me a strong work ethic that drives me to succeed. I am determined to use my experiences as motivation to continuously strive for more.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Born and raised in Los Angeles and on Catalina Island, I am a proud dad, husband, and dreamer. With a background in hospitality, working my way up from a dishwasher to running restaurants in San Francisco and LA, the pandemic changed my life and career trajectory. During this challenging time, I reconnected with my roots and started “Aguas Locas,” a modern take on the Aztec tradition of aguas frescas. Along with my friends and family we brought a taste of sunshine to Los Angeles during such a dark time and have exciting plans for the future for our all-natural bottled beverage business. I am grateful for the journey so far and am looking forward to what’s next…can’t wait for you to see!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 qualities that have been impactful in my journey have been: Communication Skills: I have been able to effectively communicate my (sometimes crazy) thoughts, ideas, and solutions. Which is crucial in any field. Improving my written and verbal communication skills has helped me better articulate and connect with others.
Adaptability: The world is constantly changing and evolving, and the ability to adapt to new situations, technologies, and processes has been really helpful. Embracing new challenges and continually learning and growing.
Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems has certainly helped me achieve certain things in my life. Developing strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills has helped me tackle challenges and make informed decisions.
Advice for developing these qualities:
Communication Skills: Read books, articles, and practice writing. Seek feedback from others on your writing and speaking skills. Take courses or workshops to improve your public speaking skills. Pay attention how people that you admire carry themselves.
Adaptability: Embrace new opportunities, and be open to change. Surround yourself with people from different backgrounds and perspectives to broaden your thinking. Stay informed about current events and industry developments. Try your best to never be the smartest person in the room.
Problem-Solving Skills: Practice critical thinking and problem-solving by regularly evaluating and improving processes and systems. Collaborate with others to find solutions, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Continuously learn new techniques and approaches for problem-solving.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents made the ultimate sacrifice when they left behind their home and loved ones to create a better life for themselves and our family. I honor their bravery and determination every day by striving to make the most of the opportunities they provided for us.
