We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Paige Killian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Paige below.
Hi Paige, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Certainly confidence can ebb and flow with our changing circumstances. While we can “do the work,” and look within, and try to keep outside influences at arms length when they’re harmful, and only let them in when they’re helpful, we’re still human. I feel so blessed to have been raised in a supportive home with parents, extended family, and a tight friend group that have allowed me to put myself out there, try new things without the fear of judgement, and feel the love when things get difficult. Not a lot of people have that and it’s not lost on me.
Choosing one story to represent a time when my confidence and self-esteem have been tested is nearly impossible. It shows up in so many areas of my life. Entrepreneurship, parenting, marriage, loss, and change in general can feel isolating and lonely at times, no matter how much support you have around you. I’ve experienced those feelings and so have many of the mom clients I’ve worked with over the years in my organizing and coaching business. When we’re tested in these times, having a built-in support system to remind us what’s important, encourage us to keep going, and feel the feelings with us, our self-esteem and confidence rise.
When we don’t have that kind of support, we’re still not alone. My faith has carried me through lots of highs and lows, and I share that every chance I get. Daily prayer, (sometimes hourly) when self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and anxiety are at an all-time high, can be the thing that pulls me out of those dark moments. There’s a peace beyond all understanding that covers me in those trying times when I surrender the human feelings to God and trust that there’s a plan that’s even greater than my own. That’s a relief for this Type A, overachieving, recovering perfectionist!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a wife, mom of two, and former elementary school teacher of fifteen years, turned professional organizing business owner, turned Mompreneur Strategist. I’ve been called the Queen of the Pivot, which makes me laugh, but definitely rings true.
While I still love working with kids, living for those hugs and lightbulb moments, and geek out over a newly organized home I get the pleasure of creating with the greatest moms in my community and in my virtual organizing business, my current focus is keynote speaking. I’ve had the pleasure of sharing my 3 E’s Philosophy for getting organized since 2015 from the stage, on my podcasts, in my book, and in my clients’ homes.
In the last few years I started noticing that the conversations I was having with my clients and friends was changing from, “How do I organize this?” to “How did you start a business, publish your book, and start a podcast while being a full-time mom?” After a pretty persistent voice in my heart kept saying, “It’s time to pivot,” I finally started the Time to Pivot podcast and reimagined my 3-step strategy.
I shifted my message from getting organized in 3 simple steps to embracing change and learning to pivot with confidence in 3 simple steps. Unsure of how this would land on my long-time audience and brand new one in the personal growth space, I tested it out weekly on my new podcast and recently shared it in front of a panel of several speaker-booking experts with backgrounds in TV, radio, podcasting, and journalism. In 2023, the Time to Pivot podcast topped the charts internationally in the education and self-improvement categories in the first week of its launch. A year later, I received the Speaking Excellence Award, the Panel’s Favorite Award, and now get the opportunity to share this life-changing strategy across many more platforms. I’m still pinching myself to make sure it’s not a dream and finding more ways to share this strategy that my clients and I use daily. Next up, a TEDx Talk!
I now get the privilege of working with outstanding women, who are leaning into their gifts and learning to embrace change (not resist it) in order to confidently pivot when roadblocks come up. I love seeing them go from stuck and stressed (I’ve been there!) to focused and fulfilled. Whether we’re using the 3 E’s to get organized in their home or to set and accomplish other goals in their life or business, it’s such a joy to see them move forward with confidence. They inspire me! Life gets crazy and I believe the key to pushing past the overwhelm is simplifying everything in a style that works best for us and our families. That’s where the 3 E’s (Essentials, Enhancements, and Extras) can help. Implementing this tried and true 3-step strategy will help you master the art of the pivot and take action toward your goals, big and small.
If you’re feeling that tug at your heart to step into something more and need some backup that shortcuts the process, I’d love to help support you in that. I offer laser-focused 90-minute virtual strategy sessions, a 6-week program, and a 6-month program. I also host a 4-Day Online Organizing Challenge that’ll give you the tools to transform your home without the stress and overwhelm! For more information on these programs, to connect with me personally, or book me to speak at your next event go to my website www.everythingwithstyle.com or find me on social @everythingwithstylemom.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ve been told by teachers, by peers, and even “supportive” family members that I talk a lot, that I’m a perfectionist, and I’m an overachiever. Well, it’s true. While I found their words to be a hurtful jab in the moment, no matter how light and funny they thought they were being when it was said, it definitely left an imprint on my self-confidence. As a kid and young adult, I let that stop me from speaking up as much as I wanted, and I constantly ruminated over those words, wishing I could have talked less, done less, been less.
The great news is I’m speaking in past tense now. Instead of fighting those parts of me forever, I finally did these three things that have massively impacted my life: owned the truth in their statements, leaned into the gifts God gave me (which we all have), and decided to turn those skills and blessings into a positive drive to serve others.
Here are some of those blessings that I hope will be an example of what’s possible for you too.
I created a professional organizing business that helps busy moms and their awesome families enjoy their homes more and experience a life without clutter holding them back. I started two top-ranked, award-winning podcasts sharing my simplified strategies that are listened to in more than 100 countries around the world (with the help of some tech-savvy angels from The Podcast Boutique). I wrote and published a bestselling book (with the help of my editor, Jessica Killingley, and publisher, Samantha Joy, from Landon Hail Press) that breaks down the organizing process to 3 simple steps and exposes some of my personal battles with anxiety that I’ve learned to embrace in order to pivot with confidence. And now I’m sharing this message from the stage, using all those words I used to keep inside, in hopes of encouraging and inspiring others to use their gifts for good and watch the blessings flow in.
So don’t let the words and actions of others or negative thoughts, fear, or doubt of your own hold you back. Use it! Be bold and brave, take chances, and know that every one of those choices you intentionally make will bring you closer to the greatness that’s meant for you.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the things we need to accomplish on a daily basis, not to mention the big goals we dream of accomplishing in the future. I’ve found that using the 1% Rule helps tremendously. If it’s a smaller task such as tackling that annoying mail pile or purging the clutter in an area of your home, focus on getting 1% more organized at a time. Pickup one letter and process it: rip it up and recycle it, pay a bill, or whatever is needed. Choose one item to let go of in your space and donate it to someone who can use it. Often times this small step feels like a quick win and inspires you to do a bit more without the stress of needing to accomplish it all at once.
If it’s a short or long-term, bigger goal that’s causing feelings of overwhelm, choose one thing you can do today to move in that direction. Rome wasn’t built in a day and reaching your goals doesn’t have to happen in 24 hours either. Enjoy the journey it takes to get there. Celebrate your wins and learn some lessons along the way. The 1% Rule takes the pressure off and allows you to breathe while you move forward. You’ve got this!
