We recently connected with Paige Metcalf and have shared our conversation below.
Paige, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
As a photographer, I keep my creativity alive by constantly seeking new perspectives—whether it’s chasing golden hour light in familiar places or experimenting with unconventional angles and techniques. I draw inspiration from everyday moments, letting mood, movement, and emotion guide my lens. When I feel stuck, I step away, explore other art forms, or collaborate with other creatives to reignite my vision. Photography, for me, is less about perfection and more about curiosity and trying new things—always asking, “What’s next?” instead of “What happens now?”.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a photographer and videographer based in West Michigan, specializing in weddings and lifestyle events. Capturing real moments and genuine emotion is at the heart of what I do, and I feel incredibly honored every time a couple, family, or individual trusts me with their most meaningful memories. What excites me most about this work is the deep connections I get to form with my clients—getting to know their stories, celebrating alongside them, and preserving those fleeting moments so they can relive them for years to come.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my journey as a wedding photographer and videographer, three things that I feel have shaped me the most are people skills, lighting knowledge, and storytelling. Building genuine connections with clients allows me to create a relaxed, trusting environment—essential for capturing real, authentic, meaningful moments. Understanding how to work with light in any setting has helped me stay creative and consistent, even in the most unpredictable conditions. And at the heart of it all is storytelling—piecing together every laugh, tear, and quiet glance to tell a couple’s story in a way that feels honest, timeless, and uniquely theirs.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
One of the most impactful things my parents ever did for me as a creative was simply believe in me. Their constant support and encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue a creative path, even when it felt uncertain. From cheering me on during my earliest shoots to reminding me of my worth when I doubted myself, their belief never wavered. That steady foundation allowed me to take risks, grow, and build a career doing what I love.
