Meet Pakoh Lee-Golbert

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pakoh Lee-Golbert. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Pakoh, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Being diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid disease at 41 years old was a wake-up call that profoundly impacted my approach to health and well-being. Prior to this diagnosis, I had taken my health for granted, assuming that my body would always bounce back regardless of how I treated it. However, this health scare made me realize the importance of being proactive and mindful about my lifestyle choices.

One of the key areas where I made significant changes was in my diet. I started paying closer attention to the foods I consumed and their impact on my body. Embracing a balanced and nourishing diet became a priority in managing my autoimmune condition and supporting my overall well-being.

Exercise also became an integral part of my routine. I discovered that physical activity improved my mood and energy levels. Engaging in regular exercise became a way to keep my body strong and my mind centered.

Stress management played a crucial role in my journey towards better health. Chronic stress can exacerbate autoimmune conditions, so I started incorporating various stress-reduction techniques into life. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, and spending time in nature became essential tools for calming my mind and reducing stress.

Additionally, I adopted detoxification practices to help eliminate toxins from my body, which can burden the immune system. One of my favorite ways to detox is by using the sauna, which aids in sweating out toxins and promoting relaxation. I found that regular sauna sessions contributed to an overall sense of well-being.

Fasting became a part of my routine as well, as it has shown promising results in supporting cellular repair and reducing inflammation. I approached fasting with caution, ensuring that it was suitable for my individual health needs.

When my body and mind are in a good place, I find that I am most effective in all aspects of my life. I have more energy to pursue my passions, tackle challenges, and enjoy meaningful connections with others. Prioritizing self-care and maintaining a healthy lifestyle has allowed me to become more resilient in the face of health challenges and better equipped to handle whatever life throws my way.

My autoimmune thyroid disease diagnosis at 41 years old served as a powerful catalyst for positive change in my life. By taking my health seriously and adopting a holistic approach that included diet, exercise, stress management, detoxification, and fasting, I have been able to support my body and mind effectively. The journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and I continue to learn and grow.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Being an artist working in the glass smokeware industry has been an exhilarating journey filled with creativity, passion, and a strong sense of pioneering. For over two decades, I have been immersed in this emerging field, breaking barriers and challenging perceptions surrounding artistic glass pipes. What was once considered an outcast art form has slowly but surely gained acceptance in the mainstream, and I take immense pride in being a part of this transformative process.

As a trained fine art painter from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), I initially never imagined that my artistic path would lead me into the world of glass smokeware. However I found myself drawn to this unique art form that seamlessly combines functionality and aesthetics. Bringing my traditional art background into the realm of glass pipe culture allowed me to infuse the artistry and techniques of fine art into this unconventional medium.

In the beginning, the glass pipe industry existed on the fringes, often misunderstood and dismissed by the wider art world. However, with dedication, skill, and unwavering belief in the artistic potential of glass pipes, I, along with other pioneering artists, began to shift perceptions and break down the barriers that hindered its recognition as a legitimate art form.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed the gradual transformation of the glass pipe culture. It has evolved from being solely associated with utilitarian purposes to being appreciated for its artistic value. As collectors, enthusiasts, and art appreciators recognized the intricacy, craftsmanship, and creativity involved in creating these pieces, glass pipes started gaining traction in galleries and museums.

To be a part of this shift has been truly rewarding. Watching the art form I hold dear being displayed and celebrated in prestigious gallery spaces and museums has been a dream come true. It’s a testament to the perseverance of countless artists in the industry who dared to challenge norms and push the boundaries of what was considered “art.”

Working for myself in this field has allowed me the freedom to explore my creativity without constraints. I’ve had the opportunity to experiment with various techniques, collaborate with other talented artists, and innovate new designs. It’s this sense of freedom and the excitement of creating something both functional and beautiful that has kept my passion alive and thriving for all these years.

As an artist in the glass smokeware industry, I feel like a trailblazer, contributing to a movement that embraces unconventional art forms and celebrates individuality. I hope that my journey inspires others to fearlessly pursue their artistic visions and challenge the status quo, knowing that art knows no boundaries or limitations.

Looking ahead, I’m eager to see the glass smokeware industry continue to flourish, gaining even wider acceptance and appreciation in the art world. The journey has been filled with ups and downs, but the joy of creating, the thrill of breaking barriers, and the satisfaction of seeing my art showcased alongside other revered forms of art make every step worthwhile. As an artist, I will continue to push myself and the industry forward, adding my voice to the collective movement that celebrates the artistry and creativity of glass smokeware.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Persistence and Resilience. The road to acceptance and recognition for an emerging art form can be filled with challenges and setbacks. Persistence and resilience were crucial in overcoming obstacles, pushing through moments of self-doubt, and staying committed to my vision. I learned to embrace failure as an opportunity for growth and to keep moving forward even when faced with criticism or rejection. Embrace the journey as a learning process and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Stay committed to your passion and continuously seek ways to improve your craft. Surround yourself with a supportive community of like-minded individuals who understand the struggles and triumphs of your chosen path.

Innovation and Creativity. In an emerging field, there are fewer established rules and conventions, allowing for greater freedom of expression and innovation. My ability to think outside the box, explore new techniques, and push the boundaries of the art form played a significant role in distinguishing my work and contributing to the evolving reputation of glass pipes as an art form. Cultivate your creativity and embrace experimentation. Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore unconventional ideas. Stay curious and open to inspiration from various sources, both within and outside your field. Engage in continuous learning and seek inspiration from other artists and disciplines.

Business and Marketing Skills. As an artist working for myself, I had to develop a range of business and marketing skills to establish my brand, connect with potential customers and collaborators, and navigate the commercial side of the industry. Understanding pricing, negotiations, and marketing strategies were essential in reaching a broader audience and gaining recognition.Don’t neglect the business side of your artistic journey. Take the time to learn about marketing, networking, and branding. Be proactive in promoting your work through social media, exhibitions, and collaborations. Surround yourself with mentors or seek advice from professionals who can guide you in developing your business acumen.

I would also advise early journey artists to build a strong foundation of technical skills in their chosen medium. Mastery of the fundamental techniques allows for greater creative expression and ensures that your artistic vision can be realized effectively.

Never underestimate the power of community and connections. Engage with other artists, attend workshops, and participate in events related to your field. Building a supportive network can provide valuable feedback, opportunities for growth, and a sense of belonging within your industry.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
As an artist in the art glass pipe industry, my ideal client would be someone who not only appreciates the unique artistry and craftsmanship involved in creating glass pipes but also understands the value of investing in a high-quality, one-of-a-kind piece. This ideal client is passionate about supporting artists and their creative endeavors, valuing the artistry as much as the functionality of the piece.

One of the most important characteristics of an ideal client would be their respect for the artistic process and the freedom to let me do what I do best—create exceptional glass pipes. Trust and creative freedom are essential components of a successful collaboration. An ideal client understands that the best results come from allowing the artist to express their vision and bring their expertise to the table.
Additionally, an ideal client in the art glass pipe industry would have a keen eye for artistic details and a willingness to appreciate the intricate techniques and skills that go into each piece. They would understand that these pipes are not just functional objects but also works of art that require time, dedication, and a mastery of the craft.
Furthermore, an ideal client would recognize the value of compensating an artist fairly for their expertise. They would understand that investing in a piece of art goes beyond just purchasing materials; it supports the artist’s livelihood and allows them to continue honing their skills and pushing the boundaries of their creativity.
Having the financial means to pay well for my expertise would provide the reassurance and support necessary to create with a clear mind and without financial strain. This financial stability would allow me to focus entirely on my artistic process, invest in high-quality materials, and explore new techniques to continually elevate the quality of my work.
