Meet Pamala McCoy

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pamala McCoy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Pamala, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

When being the only one in the room that looked like me occurred, it presented unique challenges, but I learned early on how to adapt. The key to best navigating the situation was and still is to leverage the opportunity.

For example, I once was invited to an event by the mayor held at the city’s most prestigious law firm’s office; it was an invitation only event. As I looked around the room, there were just a handful of African Americans in the room, and I was the only African American under the age of fifty and the only African American female. I could have easily wanted to just leave, letting inner feelings get the best of me; but I didn’t. Even though I knew some of the people in the room socially, it is awkward when you don’t have someone who looks like you that you immediately feel can relate to you in that unique way.

You naturally begin to have self-talk about the situation. As I always do, I say a prayer and proceed with the event. Affirming myself. Knowing my value – that I was invited like everyone else, so I belong in the room.

You ‘must’ affirm yourself daily – remind yourself of your value and capabilities, and as I like to say, “Stay ready and you don’t have to get ready” is one of my fundamental philosophies I live by.

It is unfortunate but true that in many of these type scenarios when you are the only person in the room that looks like you, the perception/expectation is that you will need to do twice as well at whatever to be perceived as half as good as a counterpart. I challenge you to ALWAYS see the glass as half full rather than half empty – use your being the only one like you to your advantage.

At this event, I was REMEMBERED (in a positive way) by EVERYONE I engaged with and could not be confused with ANYONE else in their recollection, because I was the only one (wink) … and my business prospered as a result of the event due to how I worked the room, leveraged the opportunity, saw the glass as half full and used what could have been perceived as a negative to my advantage.

In conclusion, you decide how you let people make you feel. I educate on this concept in the B5 ReAffirm brand of my company – once you KNOW BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT YOU ARE A “B5™” – you show up in the world different and EVERYTHING has to shift!

My assignment from THE BIG GUY is to introduce ONE MILLION females to this concept and I am on my way and hope you will assist by inviting me to present wherever females (teens – senior citizens) are gathering (conferences – book clubs – sororities). Let’s connect to talk about the details of HOW … www.PamalaMcCoy.com

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a purpose-driven, passionate person grounded in my faith. My professional background spans over 25 years in the credit industry and 16 years as in entrepreneur. I have been blessed to have experienced IMPACT and success in both, but I am most proud of my IMPACT via my businesses BONA5D™ CREDIT CONSULTANTS, LLC which was launched in 2008 to provide tools needed to “FUEL THEIR FINANCIAL POTENTIAL™” and B5™ REAFFIRM birthed in 2020 to provide a behavior modification tool designed to help females shift their mindset to that of “I’M ME” (Improve My Mental Esteem) and transform their negative thought process into powerful positive self-talk.

Both mind-shift endeavors allow me to “EMPOWER PEOPLE TO BECOME BETTER VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES”.

Whether the focus is mind or money, my differentiator is I customize what I do to ensure each participant gains valuable tools they can immediately implement for IMPACT! I focus on mind shift of one’s mindset as it relates to their money and their mental health – a holistic approach to overall well-being, by meeting persons where they are and building from there.

There is no greater feeling of joy, than to give one what I refer to as the ‘gift of self’ whether that is related to their mind or their money.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these? As I look back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful on my journey are: Work Ethic, Determination, and Resilience. The advice I would give to someone early in their journey is to recognize that each of these qualities is rooted in one’s mindset. Anything worth doing is worth doing your best. Arrive early to show commitment—if you’re not early, you’re late. Take pride in your work and strive for excellence.

Understand that everyone has something to teach you. Decide that giving up is not an option; perseverance is key. Be willing to do what others aren’t, to achieve what others won’t. As I mention on page 49 of my first book, “Success only comes before work in the dictionary.” Note, failure only occurs when you give up or stop trying. A final thought, when things don’t go as planned, and sometimes they won’t, learn the lesson, and move forward—always choose to see the glass as half full.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes, I am always looking to and excited about collaboratively partnering with others. Ideally the collaborator would be an individual, organization, or entity with a common thread of a desire for IMPACT! in the general areas of mind (self-esteem/mental health) or money (personal money management), but could be female empowerment, communication, conflict resolution, or other.

I am very interested in participating more in the conference circuit as a speaker, breakout session presenter, or panelist. Additionally, I am interested in seminars/workshops.
