We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paola Boyance a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Paola, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
To overcome imposter syndrome, I started viewing it as a challenge rather than a limitation. A book that really shifted my perspective was That’s Bold of You by Case Kenny. He talks about the power of “despite” — embracing the mindset of “He was unqualified and despite that, he made it.” This helped me realize that it’s not about feeling perfectly ready, but about choosing to show up anyway and letting action build confidence. Now, whenever I feel doubt creeping in, I remind myself that I can still succeed despite it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a photographer and storyteller at a really exciting point in my career. Lately, I’ve been questioning my place in the world, stepping out of my usual comfort zone, proposing new projects, and knocking on doors to open up opportunities. I find myself constantly reevaluating my decisions as an artist, which has led me to a deeper understanding of my craft and what I want to communicate.
Recently, I’ve been diving into Super 8 film, and it’s been such a joy to explore this medium while also testing myself in a different way. There’s something truly special about the way it captures the essence of the moment, making memories feel more vivid. I’ve always been drawn to themes of nostalgia and tradition, but now I’m focusing on love—not in a cheesy way, but in the small, genuine details that make it feel real and relatable.
In my work, I strive to find a dignified or positive narrative, not in a way that promotes toxic positivity, but rather by highlighting the lessons learned. I believe that even in the midst of challenges, there’s always a glimmer of goodness to be found. This perspective is central to my approach, and I aim to reflect it in every project I undertake.
Doing collaborative projects is something I deeply enjoy, and my goal is to portray others in the most dignified and authentic way possible, no matter their background or situation. I’m currently on a journey of self-discovery, questioning everything, and figuring out how I want to express myself through my art. It’s a time of exploration, and I’m genuinely excited about where this path will take me!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that shaped my journey were: keeping a childlike sense of play in my work, asking thoughtful questions, and staying true to who I am. Playing lets you take risks and stay curious, while good questions open doors you didn’t even know were there. And authenticity? It’s the foundation of everything. My advice: don’t lose that spark—nothing is ever that serious (except what truly matters), let your unique voice be your guide, and trust that you’ll always end up in the right places if you continually choose to show up for yourself, for others, and for what truly matters to your heart.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I’m currently looking to collaborate with artists on a new project that explores creatives and their various mediums—whether you’re a sculptor, writer, painter, or any other type of artist. If you’re interested, feel free to reach out by email or send me a DM!
