Meet Patricia Musselman

We recently connected with Patricia Musselman and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Patricia , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

My work ethic was shaped by the incredible dedication I witnessed from my mother, grandmother, and father. From a young age, I saw them work tirelessly, and their perseverance left a lasting impression on me. By the time I was 13, I knew I wanted to earn my own money, not just for the things I wanted but to build a sense of independence and pride in my efforts. I took on any opportunity to work, save, and grow, driven by the values my family instilled in me. Their example taught me that success isn’t given—it’s earned through hard work, resilience, and determination.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

With over 20 years of experience in the hair industry and more than a decade as a salon owner, I’ve dedicated my career to both my craft and the growth of my business. Now managing two locations, I stay busy not only serving my own clientele but also ensuring that I bring in the right stylists to strengthen our salon family. I take immense pride in my work, my leadership, and in fostering a supportive and talented team committed to excellence.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three key qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, leadership, and continuous learning.
1. Resilience – The beauty industry, like any business, comes with its challenges—whether it’s navigating economic shifts, managing a team, or adapting to trends. Staying committed, pushing forward through obstacles, and embracing change have been essential in my growth. Advice: Develop a strong mindset. Challenges are inevitable, but your ability to adapt and stay focused will set you apart. Surround yourself with mentors or peers who inspire and motivate you.
2. Leadership – Owning a salon means more than just being a skilled stylist; it requires building and leading a team. Creating a positive culture, hiring the right people, and leading with integrity have been crucial to my success. Advice: If you aspire to leadership, start by honing your communication skills, learning to listen, and understanding how to bring out the best in others. A great leader doesn’t just manage—they inspire.
3. Continuous Learning – The industry is constantly evolving, and staying ahead requires dedication to growth. From advanced education with industry leaders to refining my business skills, I’ve always prioritized learning. Advice: Never stop investing in yourself. Take classes, attend workshops, and stay curious. The more knowledge and skills you gain, the more valuable you become in your career.

For anyone just starting, remember that success doesn’t happen overnight. Stay patient, work hard, and surround yourself with people who push you to be better. The effort you put in today will build the foundation for your future.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

Reflecting on my journey, “Relentless” has been a cornerstone in shaping my approach to both personal and professional challenges. Here are a few impactful insights I’ve gained:
1. The Cleaner Mentality: Grover introduces the concept of “Cleaners”—individuals who are at the top of their game and possess an unwavering drive to achieve excellence. This mentality emphasizes the importance of relentless pursuit of goals, trusting one’s instincts, and maintaining focus under pressure.
2. Embracing the Dark Side: The book discusses harnessing one’s inner strength and confronting fears to push beyond limits. This involves embracing challenges, viewing obstacles as opportunities, and channeling inner desires to fuel success.
3. Trusting Your Instincts: Grover emphasizes the importance of confidence in one’s decisions and the ability to act decisively. Trusting your instincts allows for swift action and adaptability in dynamic situations.

These lessons have been instrumental in reinforcing the importance of mental toughness, self-belief, and a commitment to excellence in my career.
