Meet Patricia Richardson-Smith

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patricia Richardson-Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Patricia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I feel in love with graphic design at the age of 18. I was fresh out of high school and my church needed someone to do the newsletter. I offered and found joy in creating something from scratch that everyone could enjoy. I remember using Microsoft Publisher templates and learning about the different color pallets. It was like a new world opened up to me and I was excited to explore all that I could do. I loved serving God by creating flyers and publications spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. I knew then that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Patricia Marie Designs is a Minority owned and women-owned business. As a freelance graphic designer, I know the importance of branding and making a name for myself. I believe that small business owners are both excited and intimidated by the journey of following their dreams and it’s my desire to help them build. I also love supporting families with design products that are polished and perfect for their next event. Whether it’s for a church event or a birthday party, I want to support them through it all!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I would say

Belief in yourself, Belief in God and Overcoming your fears are 3 qualities needed to pursue any dream. The 3 skills helped me to start my business in 2020 when I was let go from my government job due to covid. I knew that I needed to feed my family, so in the face of fear and dealing with imposter syndrome I trusted God and took a leap of faith. I created my business page and started reaching out to family and friends to see if they needed any design services. I had to believe that God was with me, believe that I am good enough and overcome my fears to support my family.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The Magic of thinking big by David J. Schwartz is one of my favorite books. I have read it 3 times and it hits me differently each time. The book was about how we are more capable of greatness if we simply believe in ourselves and make attainable goals to get there. This is one of my must reads
