Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patrick Adams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Patrick, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
It’s hard to enter into a world such as a musical community with so much talent already present and names already established. You need to do something to be visible right away. That was my journey into the world of making children’s music.
There were several internal challenges I faced as I tried to create things to put out there for worldwide public consumption. Would anyone listen? Would anyone care? Would they think I was untalented? Will anyone think I have a good singing voice, even if it felt strange to me to hear my own songs? Would people look at me and think I don’t belong here? Am I an impostor?
Over the last 6 years, I have faced those challenges head on with a belief in my vision and approach. I wanted to get to know other artists in my community, so I started a podcast called Kindie Rock Stars that highlighted them, their music and their stories, which now is in its 5th season. I have released 8 albums so far and have millions of plays throughout the streaming and download services. I applied for and was accepted to be a voting member of the Recording Academy. I’ve helmed a collaborative musical project called Kindies Do the 80’s, where I and members of the Children’s music community cover great songs from the 80’s. My music and the podcast have won numerous awards.
All of this took time and dedication and a firm belief in my vision. I know there are so many artists more talented musically than me, with better voices and musical ability and knowledge. But I believe I’ve carved out a little place for myself in this community and the world of music. And I believe I have something to offer and that I am most definitely not an impostor.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Patrick Adams Books & Music, LLC has 3 main focuses in the work of family based multi-media entertainment. Primary has become music, with 4 Children’s Music Albums and 4 albums in the Kindies Do the 80’s cover album series. Along with these albums are a growing YouTube channel and significant social media presence. Second has become my podcast, Kindie Rock Stars, which features other members of the Family Entertainment community and their music, videos and stories. I am in my 5th season of the show and have 300+ episodes available on all podcast platforms. Finally, there are 2 series of Children’s Books. Amazing Lisa is all about 3 kids and their magical stuffed animal traveling the world and having adventures. The books are based on my 3 older children and each book is set in a different part of the world. There are 7 books n this series and feature the countries of England, France, Australia, India, Japan, Brazil and Italy. Rhythm’s World is a series for beginning readers that teach kids about topics such as music, profession, the world and many others. The book series features my two younger daughters. There are 6 books available in this series.
Coming soon is my newest album, Imagination Time with Patrick, where I dive in to silly topics that will hopefully bring a smile to the faces of kids and adults alike.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Vision – where I may lack in overall musical chops, I make up for in vision and making that vision come to life.
2) Organization – releasing music, books or hosting a podcast takes significant organizational skills and those have served me well
3) Adaptability – knowing that you may need to course correct or fight harder through adversity to achieve your goal.
The key element is knowing what you want. You may not know how to achieve it, but if you know what you want, you can build that bridge to get there.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My number one challenge is marketing and visibility to a wider worldwide audience. Ultimately, it’s getting my work in front of more people to grow my fan base and bring more eyes and ears to our community of music. For the first time, I am investing more in the marketing of an album that I am in the creation of it. My newest album is very much a DIY effort and I will engage a PR firm for its release.
