Meet Patrick Hickman

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Patrick Hickman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Patrick below.

Hi Patrick, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I think having a great support system is key. Between having my wife, family, friends and great acting teachers, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have people that believe in me but also push me. Having people that remind me of I am and what you can do, helps keep me resilient.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m an actor, originally from the Philadelphia area, now been out in LA for 10 years. Been lucky to be continuously working during my time out here, and hoping that continues. I’ve had few films at recently having doing their festival runs, “Red Lillies” directed by Benjamin Knobel, and “Last Known Location” directed by Danny Donnelly, which I was just nominated for Best Actor at the First Glance Film Festival.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Motivation, humility, and patience. It’s definitely hard to stay motivated sometimes when it feels like you are perfect for a role and don’t get it’s or you haven’t had an audition in a while, and easy to get jealous of other people’s careers. You have stay patient and know that your path is specifically your path, you can’t compare yourself to other people.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

I think it better to be well-rounded, especially as an actor. Learning new skills, going for different roles, even changing your look every once and awhile. As someone who hallway gets cast in dramas, I’m definitely trying to branch out into more comedies, and I’m training to learning some new skills, including boxing and playing the guitar. Things that just keep you ready for any role that comes your way. I’ve had roles in the past that I’ve lost out on because I didn’t have the specific skill that they needed. Just have to be ready for anything.
