We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Patrick Hilgart. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Patrick below.
Patrick, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
We are all very much impacted by our environments. We are constantly taking in information, and creating ideas about who, and how are. Building self-esteem requires many of us to undo a lot of that. That takes a great letting go, which can be confronting. But it’s in that letting go, that we create space for confidence to arise naturally by way of our own self acceptance.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Yeah, sure. Let’s see, one time, I wedged a raisin so far up my nose, I had to be taken to the ER, where even they had trouble removing it. I’m not actively involved in that activity these days, I was 4 years old at the time of the incident.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Curiosity. I identify heavily with curiosity. It keeps me wondering, questioning, seeking more information, and deeper understanding. It keeps me learning, growing, and healing
Work ethic. When you receive something you have worked so hard for, you receive it with such gratitude, and you’ll know you can deliver. That sense of accomplishment in ourselves lasts far longer than whatever it was we originally wanted in the first place.
Self compassion. I’ve learned I can be a friend to myself in moments of struggle, instead of beating up on myself, or coming apart entirely. Now, I hold myself gently, and speak to myself lovingly, in the way a best friend would. That practice creates major shifts.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Creative Act: A Way of Being – Rick Rubin. This book is literally bursting with life affirming wisdom about the creative process. I can not recommend it enough.
