Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patrick Joven. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Patrick, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Thank you, I am excited to be on your platform to share my story.
When I was a grade school student, my favorite classes were in the sciences, with anatomy and physiology being the class I enjoyed the most. Because the subject matter explores a world mainly unseen by the naked eye, the art and illustrations in the textbooks and educational videos helped me and many others visualize the physiological mechanisms behind the structures we were learning. Later, I decided to utilize my love for drawing to create my own artwork and diagrams to help solidify what I was learning. During nursing school, where my knowledge of the sciences dove even deeper, I would continue to draw to help me study until finding a way to visualize information into a single illustration became a habit. This habit has made it quite helpful when trying to teach/explain complex scientific concepts to those wanting to learn.
My experiences contribute to my current purpose, which stems from a combination of my passion, my skills, and my want to create an impact on people at a micro and macro level by giving back to the industry through inspiring and educating future students in the field of science and healthcare by my work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Currently, I am the founder and sole artist and illustrator for BioCreative Arts, an art & illustration brand that produces artwork inspired by the health sciences as well as illustrations for individuals or companies that are involved in healthcare, medicine, and wellness and need illustrations to display the concepts that they would like to educate their clientele on. I am also a newly graduated registered nurse working in the surgical trauma ICU. Essentially Nurse by day, and artist by night, or specifically in my case, Nurse by night and artist by day since I work the night shift. Both my job as a nurse and artist come hand in hand for BioCreative Arts because being a nurse allows me to be a part of and constantly surrounded by the field and industry that inspires my artwork and illustration. I’m constantly learning in my field which gives me not only new concepts to explore and new challenges to face as a nurse, but also as an artist, as it forces me to think of ways to display these new concepts visually.
As far as upcoming events, products, and launches are concerned, I am currently working on an illustration project for a physical and massage therapist, Dr. Joi, who owns a company known as Owlchemy Massage. Also, there will be a release for a project I just finished for another company called BabyBrew Activities, founded by Kelsey Casto. I have done previous work for these companies which can be seen on my website and social media with links attached. If anyone is interested in learning more about them, please check them out because I know that they would love to get their passion projects in front of new faces!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful to me on my journey would be having passion for what I do, learning to draw and illustrate effectively, and gaining knowledge in anatomy and physiology. Having a passion for what I do is important to me because it’s the driving force that keeps pushing through the thresholds that stand in the way achieving a higher level in my skills, knowledge, and business. Investing time to learn how to draw and illustrate more effectively has saved me time in conceptualizing and executing projects as well as just being able to produce higher quality work. Staying up to date and involved in the sciences has also improved my ability to produce more effective and higher quality works for my brand. With this as my experience, I would advise those early in their journey to just wake up every day with a mindset to improve, learn, and stay consistent.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to do more collaborations! I enjoy working with others to help bring their ideas to life, such are those who need illustrations to teach their subject matter. If anyone reading this wants to collaborate with me I can be reached through social media or email!
