We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Paul Harvey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Paul below.
Hi Paul , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I feel my purpose in life and music is to help others.
In regards to the music, when I played and posted my first video in 2019 I got such a profound reaction from so many people. Here I was, an ironworker…no musical training, just a passion for an instrument and a God given gift to reach folks in a profound way. I received many messages from folks, telling me that they had been uplifted by the song Concrete Peace.
One message in particular knocked my socks off. I got a message from a lady that she had been planning on ending her life that night. But that she stumbled on that song and it touched her deep in her soul and that she couldn’t go through with it. She thanked me for putting it out in the world and it was that message that really hit home with me. That I could be used in that way to help someone I would have never met, I knew I had to continue. To help others in ways I couldn’t begin to fathom.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been Ironworking for 10 years with local 512 out of Minneapolis. Ironwork is an exciting career with a ton of opportunities and challenges. From the extreme heat to the bitter cold, the heights on top of a skyscraper to the bowls of a mine, ironworkers build America. Being an Ironworker has given me access to locations that most others do not have, including places with epic reverb! In 2019 I posted my first video of me playing the Native American style flute on a jobsite (during my breaks of course! 😂) The dichotomy of relaxing flute music on a construction site really connected with people and my video went viral. Since that time I have started a YouTube channel Paul Harvey Flute Guy and continued to make music with the flutes. I have had opportunities to make music with other talented musicians and post on all the streaming platforms as well as play at fairs, yoga sessions and Flutestock music fest in Oregon. Last year I was able to preform on the HBO show Second Chance Stage. While I didn’t win I made it to the finale and got to meet some amazing people! Who knows where the music will take me next?! I take every opportunity to play and almost always have a flute on me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three things I think are important to have in this walk are
1. Indomitable spirit. The will to persevere through tough times and to keep going even when its tough.
2. Thick skin. You have to be able to follow your heart even when others doubt you. Especially in the construction world, being vulnerable and sharing your heart can open you up to alot of derision. Keep true to your calling friend!
3. A willingness to always be learning. A great axiom to follow is “learn something new every day” whether its in music or life, having that attitude will help you go far. When I started I didn’t know a lick about playing flute. Just being willing to learn and listen has helped me go from obscurity to millions of views and countless interactions that have shaped my life and others.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
