We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paul Marks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
I made the decision to start a business using the same abilities I had from my previous job. I noticed that I could serve people and start my own business by using my existing skills rather than coming up with anything new. I choose to see my termination as a chance to improve rather than letting the negative emotions crush me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
One of the things I’m the most excited about with my business is helping both local businesses and online entrepreneurs find the freedom that they seek so they can focus on what excites them the most and the more important aspects of life instead of getting burnt out at a full-time job. This is inspired by myself because working a full-time job and becoming a father for the first time made me reconsider things because I wanted to provide for my family, but I also wanted to make sure I had enough time for my daughter. My goal in marketing is not just to help businesses make more money, but it’s to get their time back so they can enjoy life. I also love the creativity of it because I get to combine offline and online marketing with individuals; I don’t just give people generic advice. Everything we do is custom for each unique person.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Desire to learn: I always have a desire to learn and grow, whether that’s in business or in my personal life. This is important because if you’re not willing to learn, then eventually you will fall behind, or you’ll simply keep struggling instead of finding the right solution.Marketing: obviously having marketing knowledge is important if you’re going to run a marketing agency; however, people want to connect with others. The advice I would have no matter the industry is to make it something you enjoy and people could connect with. This was a major key in my business. Creative thinking: if I just followed what other people told me, then my business would look entirely different. What I did was take solid advice from different areas and different experts and combine it into something that reflected my own personality and my own expertise. I had to be able to look beyond what I heard in a video or meeting and use it in a creative way for my business.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
As a business owner, I place a high value on teamwork and collaboration. We don’t succeed alone, in my opinion. I do have a program where I work with entrepreneurs, coaches, or business owners who have a track record of success or a loyal following. They can be the experts and assist others in their field because I handle all of the marketing and customer service. My goal is to assist others in rising to the top so they can assist others in moving up their own success ladder. You can contact me by emailing [email protected]
