Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Paul Rogalski. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Paul, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
Taking risk just came natural to me, especially with choosing a career in music.
Being a professional musician can go in so many directions and you have to be open for those different opportunities that can come your way.
As a musician there is touring on the road, studio musician being hired for playing on other peoples recordings, writing your own music and performing live and nowadays giving it away on all the social media avenues. Also working with different people and personalities or egos or complete generosity and creative connections.
Basically you just have to have a very open mind and awareness of your own intentions for your path and not be afraid to say yes or no.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Paul comes from Boston MA and spent his time at Berklee College of Music mastering the electric bass.
A graduate from the class of 1990 puts Paul a cut above and his years of performing with numerous acts over the years.
Paul is a founding member and bassist for Mojomama which includes his wife Jessica as the Lead Singer.
Original band Mojomama founded in 2004, playing their own Funked Up Blues Rock styles is still going strong.
They have 5 full length albums of original music which have been well received on CO radio airplay.
Performed at numerous venues and festivals throughout CO over the years and finally made it to Boston in 2024 to play a couple shows. Last summer our most exciting show was at Levitt Pavilion in Denver opening for Melvin Seals of the Jerry Garcia band and 6000 smiling people on a summer eve.
Paul and Jessica also opened Mojo’s Music Academy in Longmont CO in 2007. Mojo’s is still going strong and grows more students every year. We offer private lessons, summer camps and group classes. Paul and Jessica are instructors and have a total of 14 instructors on the roster.
We are so proud of what we do and get to see our students also pursuing careers in music.
Some play in the Denver symphony while others are currently in college with scholarships for commercial music in Utah or a full scholarship to Berklee College of music.
We recently went to watch our vocal student play the lead role in their high school musical which has happened with numerous voice students over the years.
That is some of the most rewarding times, especially when students say “Thankyou, you’ve changed my life!!”
We couldn’t ask for any more with our Mojo’s Music Academy.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back when I was in College I was very focused and practiced my bass 6 hours a day but also would walk take time to walk around the city of Boston to stay grounded. So this brings Dedication to my craft.
I took a year after graduating to earn some money doing random jobs then had the courage to head out to Boulder CO.
This brought Responsibility.
I headed out to Boulder with my instrument and positive thoughts into the unknown. This brought my Not afraid of risk factor.
The best way to improve is to listen to your instincts and not be afraid to take a chance.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My wife Jessica as she is also my bandmate and business partner, has been there with and for me over the years.
We do it all together and make a great team in all ways possible.
