Meet Paula Morizono

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Paula Morizono. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Paula, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I have been chanting nam-myoho-renge-kyo as an SGI-USA member for 42 years. It helps me stay centered, brings me back to my authentic self and gives me boundless wisdom and courage. It also gives me clarity on how I should proceed with each step in my journey. Chanting is a source of positive energy. It helps me view each situation from a deep and more enlightened perspective.
When I read the guidance of my mentor in life, Daisaku Ikeda, my life feels rejuvenated and refreshed. It also encourages me to renew myself and start, “from this moment on”.
The following is a quote by President Daisaku Ikeda that inspires me.
“Humans possess immeasurable potential. Determination is what releases this latent strength, creating a momentum that can be unstoppable.”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My mission is to change the current paradigm of thinking that exercise must be done only in class settings— to one that sees how strengthening can also occur in day to day tasks. And that repetitive daily life movements, with its myriad opportunities, can be the catalyst and impetus, to building a strong body—for life!

The key to turning daily life movements into a source of strength is by applying the basics of; breath, core, posture and hip hinge. My book, “Everyday Fitness: Strength through Daily Life Activities,” explains the process in an easy to read format. It is less than a hundred pages and includes pictures and illustrations.

MARIANA’S EXPERIENCE

My student Mariana who had three little children, came to me after suffering a severe back injury. She said maybe she hurt herself rocking her baby. I said probably not. Injury was already coming to get her since she had no strength, moved incorrectly, and sat for long periods of time during for work and school.

I told her she needed to start viewing her daily life activities such as lifting her children as opportunities to tighten her core, engage her glutes and strengthen her legs/back. She became so strong she helped her husband, to his great surprise, push a car! She didn’t change her daily routine, but started using her daily movements correctly, and engaging the right muscles during each task. She became what I call “daily life strong!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. PASSION. Choose a field you are passionate about. If your passion wanes, figure out how to get it back. Or choose a new road that lights your fire!

2. COMMITMENT. Be committed. Learn your craft, then learn it some more. Seek out any opportunities to learn from the best, paid or not. You will develop a reputation for knowing your stuff, and being the best at it.

3. MENTORSHIP. Seek out great mentors. The best in the world. Learn everything you can from them. If you want to be the best, learn from the best

My specialty is working with adults and seniors, with the goal of an injury-resistant body to better serve them throughout their lives. My book, “Everyday Fitness: Strength Through Daily Live Activities,” focuses on the guiding principle of “functional fitness.”

Simply put, functional fitness means building strength through proper form, posture and ergonomics to better carry out the tasks of everyday life. To do that I stress four fundamental areas: breath, core, posture and hip hinge.

When you consider that most injuries occur while performing daily activities, this concept becomes vital. Carrying groceries, picking up a baby or even pushing a vacuum, become ways to build muscle and power, helping to prevent injuries.
