We recently connected with Pauline Sylvain-lewis and have shared our conversation below.
Pauline, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Max Candle’s purpose is to provide holistic healing through affordable aromatherapy. As well as provide a unique product which will continue to attract and maintain customers. In 2020, we employed 13 youth workers and provided entrepreneurship training to them. Under the leadership of an active advisory committee, our goal is to support our local community youth programs.
We found our purpose through the art of making candles as a form of healing, support, and strategies for sharing that experience with the world. Located in the Morgan Park community, Max Candles produces high-quality and eco-friendly scented candles, as well as aromatherapy products used to be tools for relaxation, healing, uplighting, and support. The business was inspired by the healing journal of Maxime Sylvain, and his
ability to empower individuals to bring positivity into the world.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Max Candle, LLC is a local family business founded after the unexpected death of a loved one. The family used the art of making candles as a form of healing, support, and strategies for sharing that experience with the world. Since 2020, we employed 13 youth workers and provided entrepreneurship training to them. Under the leadership of an active advisory committee, our goal is to support our local community youth programs. When we adhere to this maxim, everything else will fall into place. Our services exceed the expectations of our customers and we want to continue to grow in business. We take pride in partnering with multiple non-profit organizations and youth programs throughout the community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Adaptability
As a business owner, unexpected challenges and changes in the market are constants. Learning to pivot quickly—whether it’s a shift in customer preferences, industry regulations, or economic conditions—has been vital. Adaptability allowed me to stay resilient, innovate, and turn obstacles into opportunities. Develop adaptability by staying informed about industry trends, regularly evaluating your strategies, and practicing mindfulness to stay calm under pressure. Take time to reflect on setbacks and find lessons in them.
Whether it’s with customers, partners, or your team, relationships are at the heart of business success. People want to work with someone they trust and respect. Building genuine connections has helped me create partnerships, retain clients, and foster a strong company culture. Improve this skill by actively listening, showing empathy, and following through on commitments. Networking is important, but the quality of your interactions matters more than the quantity. Understanding the financial side of my business—budgets, cash flow, and profitability—has been key to making informed decisions and ensuring long-term sustainability. It’s not just about knowing the numbers but using them to guide your strategy.
Take courses or find mentors to strengthen your financial acumen. Track your finances diligently, and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice when needed. Even a basic understanding of financial metrics can go a long way.
Be patient with growth: Success doesn’t happen overnight. Focus on building a strong foundation and learning as you go.
Stay curious: Constantly seek to learn from others—mentors, peers, and even competitors.Take calculated risks: Growth often requires stepping out of your comfort zone, but always weigh potential risks against rewards.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Currently, the biggest challenge I face as a business owner and real estate developer is securing adequate funding for a shipping container building project on the far south side
